A Heart Broken
Vira sees a dream of the day she became Lord Commander of Albion. It soon turns into a nightmare as she is reminded of the pain of losing Katalina. Luminiera senses Vira's mind beginning to slip, and takes over Vira's consciousness to protect her.
Vira: Hraaah!
Katalina: Hraaah!
Vira: Pant... Pant... Ngh!
Katalina: Hraaah!
Vira: ...!
Katalina: ...!
Vira: ...!
Vira: (Katalina... if this is what you truly want...)
Vira: Hraaa—
Katalina: Vira... Forgive me.
Vira: (...!)
Vira: (No... No!)
Vira: (Don't leave me again! You can't! You can't!)
Katalina: Garh!
Vira: Huh...
Vira: Wha?
A sickly warm liquid flows down Vira's sword and soaks her hand in red.
Katalina: ...
Vira: Nooo!
Vira: Aaaaah!
She stumbles back, only to find the same dark red has engulfed her feet.
Vira: Aah... Ah... Ah...
Vira: ...
Vira: Katalina! Katalinaaa!
Vira: No! My Katalina!
Vira: Haah! Haah...
Haah...
The night returns to silence. Beads of cold sweat drip down from Vira's face.
Vira: ...
Her bloodshot eyes look around the room. She's in her quarters on the Grandcypher.
Vira: ...!
Katalina's Voice: ...
Lyria's Voice: Can't... eat any more...
Vira: ...
Vira: Katalina...
Vira slumps to the floor and stifles her sobs. The tears soon follow.
She feels relief that it was all a dream, but the horror of the images are still fresh in her mind. How many times has this nightmare come to torment her?
Vira: Katalina... I...
Vira: If not for you, I have no reason to be. To be here, to be on this journey... To live.
Vira: ...
The recurring nightmare has taken a great toll on Vira. So much so that it seems to extinguish the very light in her eyes.
Vira: ...
Luminiera: ...
Vira: ...
The young woman stands on deck, staring up at the clear night sky.
Luminiera: ...
When Luminiera finds her all alone, the primal beast happily nuzzles itself into her arms.
Vira: ...
Her tired eyes still staring on, Vira caresses the primal beast with a practiced hand.
Luminiera seems almost catlike in its response, purring and moving Vira's hand to where it wants to be pet.
Luminiera: ...
Vira: ...
Vira: If only I was more like you, Luminiera... childlike... gentle... Perhaps my life would be different...
Luminiera: ...?
Vira: It's nothing.
Luminiera: ...
Vira: Pay me no mind. It's just... that dream from last night. I need some time to recover, is all.
Vira: I'm all right.
But Luminiera sees through her words, and it senses the empty darkness that's entered its master's heart—
Senses that Vira's eyes are open but see nothing.
Senses that if she ever lost the one she loves, she would surely lose herself as well.
Luminiera fears for its master who has but one reason to live...
And knows the signs are too serious to ignore.
Vira: Nn...
Luminiera: ...
Luminiera: ...!
Vira: Katalina... Katalina... Katalina...
Vira: No! No!
Don't leave me, Katalina! Don't leave me!
???: ...
Vira: Who's there?
???: ...
Vira: You... You're...
Vira: Me?
(No... There's something wrong here...)
???: ...
Before her, Vira finds what seems to be another version of herself. Primal bits float about in the air around.
Vira: Luminiera... It's you, isn't it?
Luminiera: ...
Vira: Is there something you want to tell me?
Vira: ...?
Lyria: Yawn... Oh, Vyrn. Good morning...
Vyrn: Mornin'! Lyria, you look like you're still asleep!
Lyria: Ehehe. There was a book I just couldn't put down!
Lyria: And good morning to you, (Captain)!
One morning (Captain) and company gather on deck and exchange pleasantries.
Vira, however, stands out from the crowd.
Vira: ...
She stares off into blank space, eyes never seeming to catch sight of any one thing.
Lyria: Good morning, Vira!
Vira: Good morning. Lyria, Vyrn. (Captain).
Vira then proceeds to hug each member after she greets them.
Lyria: Huh?
Vyrn: Oh hey. Good mo—
Vyrn: Wha! What're you doing?
Vira: Everyone. You are all so warm and so kind.
Vyrn: Th-the heck's gotten into you?
Vira: ...?
I'm just happy to see you all.
Vyrn: Whaa?
Lyria: Hehehe! You startled me for a second there, but I'm happy to see you too!
Vira: You're so guileless and pure, Lyria. I love that about you.
Lyria: Oh my! I think I'm going to blush!
Vira: Well then, Lyria, Vyrn, (Captain). A good day to you all.
Vira delivers the line in perfect monotone and parts ways with the trio.
Vyrn: Psst. Am I the only one feeling Vira's a little extra weird today?
Vira: Weird? What ever do you mean? Could you be more specific?
Vyrn: Eep! How'd you hear that?
Vyrn: Well, it's kinda hard to say exactly...
Vira: Silly Vyrn. I'm me.
Vira: Well then, I'd best get to preparing breakfast.
Vira: I look forward to enjoying our meal together. Until then.
Vira gives an elegant curtsy and saunters away toward the kitchen.
Vyrn: She's cooking?!
Lyria: Wowie! I can't wait! Vira's cooking!
Vyrn: Am I the only one creeped out by this?
Vyrn: (Captain), tell me you don't smell something fishy here too.
(Captain) nods. Something is definitely amiss here.
The question is... What?
A Heart Restored
In her dream Vira looks back on blissful academy days spent with Katalina, on lonesome years of separation from her, and on the battle they fought after their reunion. When her dream starts to take a dark turn again, Luminiera intervenes to stop the nightmare's cruel conclusion.
From a young age, Vira had never thought much of life. It was, in her words, an utter bore.
In whatever she did, she was the best. Always and without effort.
Not even her elder brothers could attempt to compete with her. Studies, art, swordcraft. She mastered them all.
Vira: My father was a baron, owning more than half of all businesses on the island.
Vira: The young, naive me thought I would be next to inherit that position.
Vira: But eventually I realized my father had no such hopes for me.
It was then that she enrolled herself into Albion's military academy. At the very least she could now avoid being married off to a stranger.
And in the best of cases, she might just find a challenge.
Her hopes for the latter, however, were soon dashed.
The students proved to be no match for her. The lectures taught her nothing new.
The teachers themselves knew nothing.
Vira: There was no one I could consider a worthy rival. None who so much as piqued my interest.
Vira: Spending my days staring up at the clouds might have been a more fruitful venture.
Vira: But everything changed the day I met Katalina.
Katalina: Are you all right?
Vira: Huh? Y-yes, thank you.
Vira: That day I knew what I had to give my life to. Whom I had to give my life to.
The gray everyday of academy life had suddenly blossomed with color for Vira.
Katalina: Vira... I always seem to have you all to myself.
Katalina: I'm not keeping you from your other friends, am I?
Vira: Not at all. You needn't worry about that.
Vira: Nothing means more to me than our time together, Katalina. I'd spend every minute with you if I could.
Katalina: I'm flattered to hear that, Vira. But...
Katalina: You know I won't be here forever.
Katalina: Once I've graduated... I'm worried I'll leave you all alone.
Vira: Katalina...
Vira: There's no need to worry about me. I've fared just fine without friends in the years before I met you.
Katalina: ...
Vira: Katalina?
Katalina: Vira. You're such a bright and lovely person. I want to give others the chance to see that side of you.
Vira: Katalina...
Katalina: Did you know how many admirers you have? They wish they could talk to you but can't work up the courage to strike a conversation.
Vira: What?
Katalina: Haha.
Katalina: If only they knew what a wonderful friend you can be.
Vira: ...
Katalina: Vira. There'll come a time when you'll have more friends than you can imagine. I know it.
Vira: ...
(But all I want is you, Katalina...)
Katalina: Hm? Why the long face? Was it something I said?
Vira: No, no! Not at all. I was just... moved.
Vira: You really are too kind to me, Katalina.
Well then! We'd best finish these sandwiches!
Katalina: Ah, much appreciated. They look delicious.
Vira: The way she moved in training...
Vira: The silhouette of her profile...
Vira: The soft sheen of her lips...
Vira: The gentle flow of her hair...
Vira: The hint of her aroma...
Vira: I loved every moment with her.
Each day was like a dream.
Vira: But those dear three years ended all too soon.
Vira: The Lord Commander at the time died from a bitter sickness. Haste was made to begin the selection of his successor.
Katalina: I didn't spend my days in training to be the next Lord Commander!
Vira: Katalina... If this is what you truly want... I'll bear this burden for you!
Since the times of old, the Lord Commander has been chosen by way of a grand tournament.
In accord with the pact between the city and the primal beast Luminiera, Albion's protector.
Vira: After graduating the academy, Katalina left to become a knight of the imperial army. I became the Lord Commander of Albion.
Vira: Because of my bond with Luminiera, I was unable to leave the island.
Vira: The days without Katalina were like wandering through an empty, endless darkness.
Vira: Until that faithful day...
Vira: If you're looking for a restaurant, perhaps I can give you a few recommendations?
Vyrn: Hm? Who are you? A local or something?
Katalina: Vira...
Vira: It's been quite some time, my dearest Katalina. I hope you've been faring well?
Vira: Six years... Six long years.
Vira: How I wished to leave the island and find her, but all I could do was wait for her return.
Vira: And every night since, that dream has haunted me. I'd see her leave and never come back.
Vira: I can't bear to see her leave me again...
Vira: Never again... No matter the cost.
Vira: Pant... Pant... Ngh!
Katalina: Hraaah!
Vira: ...!
Katalina: ...!
Vira: ...!
Vira: (Katalina... if this is what you truly want...)
Katalina: Garh!
Vira: Hraaa—
Vira: (No! Don't! Stop!)
Vira: (Nooo! Aaah!)
Luminiera: (...)
Vira: (Huh?)
Luminiera Omega: ...
Luminiera Omega appears before Vira in the nightmare to prevent her from once again doing the unthinkable.
Vira: ...?!
Katalina: Wha! What is that?
Katalina: Vira! We'll put our battle on hold for now. First we need to deal with that! Will you help me?
Vira: Of course, Katalina! Always!
Katalina: Then let's go! Stay close!
Vira: Right behind you!
A Heart Restored: Scene 2
Luminiera transfers power to Vira in order to protect her, which results in the primal beast assuming control over the young woman's body. When Luminiera gives other crew members the same amount of care usually reserved for Katalina, (Captain) senses something amiss.
Katalina: We did it!
Together with the Katalina in her dream, Vira defeats Luminiera Omega. Vira, however, faints in the dream world.
Vira: ...
Katalina: Vira! What's happened to you? Vira!
With her dream avatar fallen into a comatose state, Vira herself is unable to regain consciousness.
Luminiera: (...)
Vira: (Nn...)
She can't go on with these dreams.
Another nightmare would surely break her.
Ever the loyal companion, Luminiera decides to take drastic action to save its master from her spiral into madness and despair.
It connects with Vira's deep psyche, transferring a part of its own power to Vira.
Vira: Nnn... Haah...
Vira: Ah! Aaah!
Luminiera: (...)
Willingly or not, Vira is forced to accept Luminiera's power.
As a result Luminiera assumes control over Vira's awareness.
Vira: Breakfast is ready, everyone. Let's all sit down and enjoy.
Lyria: Wow!
Vyrn: Yes! Grub time!
Vira: Here, sit down right next to me, (Captain).
Vira: Now, open wide and say aah...
Lyria: Huh?
- "Aah!"
- Blush.
Choose: "Aah!"Vira: How was it? I hope it suits your palate.
(Captain) nods with a glow of satisfaction.
Vyrn: This day just gets weirder and weirder.
Choose: Blush.Vira: Oh? What's wrong? Porridge isn't your fancy perhaps?
Lyria: Um, Vira! I... I don't think it's the food... It's just... You can't... Well... You just can't!
Continue 1Vira: Hehe. Not to worry, Lyria. I'll be sure you get your turn as well.
Vira: Here, say aah...
Lyria: Wha! I... I can eat by myself, thank you!
Vira: No need to hold back. I'm doing this because I want to.
Vira: Now, one more time. Aah...
Lyria: H-hwa... Um... Aaah...
Lyria: Nom... Nom...
Lyria: Mmm! It's absolutely amazing, Vira!
Vira: Hehe. I'm so glad you like it, Lyria. All right, Vyrn, you're next. Say aah.
Vyrn: What the!
Vyrn: There's definitely something wrong with her! Definitely!
But (Captain)'s keen senses don't miss the strange dimness in Vira's eyes. The spark that was once there now seems no more.
Luminiera: ...
Vira: What in the skies do you think you're doing?
Vira confronts Luminiera in a dream.
Her body is asleep, allowing her to finally communicate with Luminiera.
Vira: Just what are you trying to prove, using my body like that?
Vira: Are you saying I should live my life as a fool? Wagging my tail for anyone that passes by?
Luminiera: ...
Vira: When I said I wanted to be more like you, it was a figure of speech. Nothing more.
Vira: I'd never truly want that.
A Heart Restored: Scene 3
Now comatose due to Luminiera's interventions, Vira tells Luminiera through a dream that she fears having someone in her heart other than Katalina—something brought about by (Captain). As Vira's consciousness continues to fade away, Luminiera engages Vira in a battle in the dream world in a last-ditch effort to save her.
The assimilation with the primal beast has taken a toll on Vira's mind and body.
As of late, her body has needed more and more sleep to cope with the burden of Luminiera's immense power.
Vyrn: Ever since she started acting funny, Vira's sure been sleeping a lot.
Lyria: And she hasn't been looking well at all. Oh, I hope she's all right.
Vyrn and Lyria tend to the slumbering Vira by her bedside.
(Captain) holds her hand, waiting for her to awaken.
Vira: ...
Luminiera: ...
Vira: All I've ever needed... is Katalina by my side.
Vira: Even now that hasn't changed.
Vira: But joining this crew, spending more time with others—
Vira: I've started to worry, and I don't know what to do.
Vira: The crew, they should be nothing more than strangers to me. Yet... (Captain) won't let me stay a stranger to them.
Vira: They want me to be one of them... and that scares me.
Vira: I try to ignore it, but I can always feel something pulling me slowly closer to them.
Vira: Cooperation, giving and taking... Being equals with someone else.
Vira: I've never done such things before. I've never had to.
Vira: Even in my time with Katalina; those three years we spent together weren't as equals.
Vira: Which is why... I'm afraid.
Vira: Afraid that I might have someone more important than Katalina to guide my way.
Vira: "If I'd been more open with my feelings like you are, perhaps I wouldn't have been afraid."
Vira: That's what I thought when I let those words slip from my mouth that night.
Vira: That's why you're doing all this, isn't it? You thought this was what I wanted.
Vira: But that isn't me, Luminiera. Above all things, I need to be true to who I am.
Vira: It's all right, Luminiera. You've done enough.
Vira: I'm all right.
Vira: I can't risk getting attached to anyone else. I'll have to...
Vira's consciousness begins to fade.
Prolonged separation from control of her body has started her mind on a path to deterioration.
To once again save her master, Luminiera prepares to give all its strength to Vira.
But she isn't yet ready to accept that power.
Vira's subconscious has gone into a catatonic state, refusing to let anyone in.
Luminiera: ...
Primal Luminiera: ...
Vira: What are you... doing?
Without merging with Luminiera, Vira has little hope of ever waking.
And so Luminiera turns to the only option left.
Primal Luminiera: ...!
If you can't join them, fight them.
Vira: I see. So it's a battle you want?
Vira: Then it's a battle you'll get!
A Heart Restored: Scene 4
The battle with Luminiera has opened Vira's eyes, allowing her to accept Luminiera and become one in mind and body with it. Upon awakening she sees the love and care she's received from the crew, and is moved by (Captain)'s words of acceptance.
Vira: I see the truth now...
Vira: I was too foolish to see it earlier.
Vira: How could I have been so blind. You, who have been by my side all this time, giving your all to me.
Vira: I failed to notice you despite all the loyalty you've shown me.
Vira: What a fool I am.
Vira: From the moment you acknowledged me as your master, your devotion has never wavered.
Vira: I feared so much... I shut all others out.
Vira: Even Katalina...
Vira: But that ends today.
Vira: It's time to finally show her all that I am.
Through their battle, Vira is reminded of the Luminiera's devotion to her and allows herself to accept the primal beast in body and soul.
In a mix of shame and ecstasy, tears pour out of Vira.
With that, Luminiera and Vira become one.
Vira: Nn...
Katalina: Vira! You're awake!
Vyrn: Vira!
Lyria: Vira!
The first thing Vira sees is (Captain)'s face staring back at her with concern and relief.
Vira: ...!
Katalina: You've been asleep for three days straight; everyone's been taking turns tending to you. We were worried sick.
Vira: I'm... sorry for the trouble, everyone.
Vyrn: We're just happy you woke up! How you feeling? Better?
Vira: Y-yes...
Lyria: I'm so glad you're back with us!
Rackam: Can you eat? I asked the cook to whip up some soup for you.
Io: Oh! Vira's awake?
Io: You must've been super tired to have slept that long!
Vira: ...
Katalina: Haha.
Katalina: I'll go let everyone know you're back. I'm glad you're feeling better.
Vira: Katalina...
Katalina gives a warm smile and leaves the room.
- Hold her hand.
- "Back to your old self, Vira?"
Choose: Hold her hand.Vira: ...!
Vira: So it was you. The one who's been holding my hand all this time.
(Captain) gives a gentle smile in reply.
Choose: "Back to your old self, Vira?"Vira: ...!
And the smile on (Captain)'s face says it all: "Whatever's happened, it's good to have you back."
Continue 1Vira: Luminiera and I have become one in mind and spirit.
Vira sets a primal bit into the air and displays her fine control over the flying orb.
Vira: It's the first time I've ever truly let anyone into my heart. It feels... better than I thought it would.
Vira: We're one person, one body now.
Vira: It almost feels like I've gotten a roommate inside me. But thanks to her I've managed to keep sight of what's most important.
Vira: I'm sorry for worrying you.
- "Did you solve what was bothering you?"
- Shake head.
Choose: "Did you solve what was bothering you?"Vira: Huh?
Choose: Shake head."You don't need to bottle up your feelings for the sake of others anymore," says (Captain).
"We love you for who you are, Vira. And that's all you need to be."
Vira: ...
Vira: I really am no match for you.
Vira: Why am I hearing this from you... Not Katalina, but you...
The tears feel warm against her cheeks as she whispers the words and gives a smile to (Captain).
Thereafter the nightmares never again come to haunt Vira.
And she returns to daily life.
At times, one might spot her having a pleasant chat with the other crew members.
With Katalina looking warmly on.
Free from the Fetters
Having received word that her father is critically ill, Vira reluctantly decides to return home at Katalina's urging. There the crew encounters her brother Khinder, heir to the Lillie family, as well as a doll that reminds Vira of a moment from her past.
Vira: ...
Vira scans through the letter in her hands once more, her expression clouded.
She has perused it countless times since its arrival from her older brother several days prior.
Vira: Father is in critical condition...
We need to discuss what comes next should the worst happen. Do you think you could stop by?
Her eyes linger on her brother's request.
Vira: (But how am I supposed to face my family after everything that's happened between us?)
Vira: (Father was less than pleased when I enrolled in the military academy to avoid being married off.)
Vira: (I thought surely I'd already been disowned. There's no longer any place in that home for me to return to...)
Katalina's Voice: Are you in there, Vira?
Vira: ...!
Y-yes, I am!
Vira hurriedly tucks away the letter and opens the door.
Vira: What brings you here, Katalina? If you had business with me, you need only have called—I would have come straight away.
Katalina: Oh, well... it's not really business, per se. I was just a little worried about how you've been acting these past few days.
Katalina: You've seemed unusually restless, like something's been weighing on your mind.
Vira: ...!
Katalina: Judging by your reaction, it seems I was right.
Katalina: I'd be happy to lend an ear if you need someone to talk to. But I obviously won't force you.
Vira: ...
Vira: I can't hide anything from you, can I?
Vira: It's probably a silly thing to fret over, but could I trouble you to hear me out?
Katalina: Of course. What are friends for?
Vira: Thank you. So you see...
Vira briefly explains the contents of the letter to Katalina.
Vira: I'm not sure what to do. I haven't been home in so long, it's hard to imagine simply waltzing in out of nowhere...
Katalina: Personally, I think you should go.
Katalina: Oh—I don't mean out of a sense of duty or anything like that. I can understand why you're hesitant.
Katalina: It's just, I feel like deep down you don't actually despise your father.
Katalina: I know you two have had your differences, but if you truly resented or even hated him, I'm sure you wouldn't be so worried.
Vira: Well...
Katalina: A parting can come at any time, just like it once did for the two of us.
Katalina: In the worst case, you might end up with regrets that haunt you for the rest of your life. That would be tough on anyone.
Katalina: If you're worried about going alone, I'm more than willing to come with you. How does that sound?
Vira: Katalina...
Vira: All right then. I'd appreciate that.
With Katalina's encouragement, Vira makes up her mind to return to her hometown.
After learning of the situation, (Captain) decides to accompany them out of a sense of responsibility as captain of the crew.
Upon Vira's arrival in her hometown, she is greeted by her eldest brother who leads her to their father's sickbed.
His sleeping face is thin due to his illness, but peaceful. Relieved, Vira leaves the room.
Vira: Phew...
Katalina: How is he, Vira? Any better?
Vira: His condition seems to have improved for the time being. He's sleeping now.
Vira: But his health could still deteriorate at any moment, so I've decided to stay the night.
Katalina: I think you made the right call.
Vira: You should all lodge here tonight as well. There's no need to make you travel back and forth from the ship.
Lyria: Is there anything we can do to help, Vira?
Vyrn: Just say the word if so!
Vira: Thank you both. I'll be sure to let you know if something comes up.
???: I see you found each other all right.
Lyria: Th-thank you for having us!
???: Sorry I didn't have a chance to greet you properly before. There was a lot going on...
Katalina: It's fine. We should be the ones apologizing for barging in here like this.
Khinder: Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Khinder, Vira's older brother.
(Captain), Katalina, Lyria, and Vyrn all greet him in turn, expressing their thanks for his hospitality.
Khinder: I'm the acting head of the family at the moment, so feel free to let me know if you need anything.
Vira: Where are the rest of our brothers?
Khinder: Well... they unfortunately couldn't make it due to a sudden urgent matter.
Vira: That's too bad... Or rather, perhaps it's a good thing.
Vira: I'm sure not all of them would be as pleased to see me as you are.
Khinder: That's not true!
Vira: Forgive me. I shouldn't have said something like that.
Vira: We'll be heading to my room now, so please let me know if there are any changes.
Let's be on our way, everyone.
Katalina: A-all right.
(Captain) turns to follow after Vira, but stops as Khinder calls out in a tentative voice.
Khinder: Excuse me... (Captain)? Er...
Khinder: Is Vira doing well as part of your crew? She's not causing any problems, is she?
- She seems to be enjoying herself.
- We couldn't live without her.
Choose: She seems to be enjoying herself.Khinder: I see. She never used to smile much back when we were kids, so I'm relieved to hear that.
Choose: We couldn't live without her.Khinder: Hearing that makes me proud to be her big brother.
Khinder: As embarrassing as it is to admit, she helped me out of many a tight spot back in the day too. Hahaha...
Continue 1Khinder: I'm glad I got to hear a little bit about what Vira's been up to. Thank you.
Khinder: I'll prepare your rooms in a moment, so make yourselves comfortable until then.
Vyrn: Whoa, this is your room, Vira? It's so huge and fancy!
Lyria: And look at all the cute dolls!
Vira: If one catches your eye, feel free to take it. I was always receiving them as gifts, so I daresay I have too many.
Vira: You too, Katalina. Please make yourself at home.
Katalina: Come to think of it, I haven't heard much about your childhood.
Katalina: This might be a good opportunity to get to know you even better.
Vira: (Katalina, in my room! Ahh, my heart's going to beat out of my chest!)
Vira: (Perhaps I should have tidied up a bit before inviting her in. But I wouldn't have wanted to keep her waiting...)
Lyria: Umm, Vira?
Vira: ...!
Ah, yes! What is it?
Lyria: Would you mind if I took this one? It has a cute, handmade look to it.
Vira: I remember this...
As soon as she sees the doll in Lyria's hands, memories come flooding back into Vira's mind.
Free from the Fetters: Scene 2
Vira thinks back on her childhood, when she harbored a grudge against Khinder for being chosen as the next family head. As she reminisces about the time he gave her a handmade doll, Khinder rushes into the room to tell her that their father has taken a turn for the worse.
Vira thinks back on a certain exchange more than ten years before.
Khinder: All right, this should be enough.
Khinder: Now I just need to get these medicinal herbs back to her—
Monster: Groooar!
Khinder: Whoa! Where'd you come from!
Khinder: G-get away from me! Go on, shoo!
Monster: Groooar!
Khinder: Eep!
Monster: Groooar...
Vira: You were asking for that.
Khinder: Vira! Whew, you're a lifesaver!
Vira: You need to get your head on straight. It won't do for the head of the family to be frightened by a monster of this caliber.
Khinder: Ahaha. You don't mince words...
Khinder: Anyway, what are you doing here?
Vira: Father sent me to fetch you. I heard you were in the forest, so here I am.
Vira: Now that we've cleared that up—why are you here?
Khinder: I was asked to gather some medicinal herbs. You know the old woman who lives alone on the edge of town, right?
Vira: Yes, I do... But why should you have to trouble yourself with something like that?
Khinder: When someone's relying on you, doesn't that make you want to do your best for them?
Vira: I don't feel like that answers my question. If we're talking about medicinal herbs, our family trades them as a commodity.
Vira: Aren't you just being taken advantage of?
Khinder: Maybe, maybe not.
Khinder: Like I said, someone's chosen to rely on me, even though I have no merits to speak of. So I'm going to do my best no matter what.
Vira: I see. You truly are good-natured to a fault, aren't you?
Khinder: Haha. I get that a lot.
Vira: (I just can't get my head around him. Despite his admitted lack of ability, people are drawn to him left and right.)
Vira: (I still don't understand why he's poised to be the next head of the family... but somehow I can't bring myself to hate him.)
Vira: (I could never be like him. Well, not that I have any reason to be.)
Vira: (I don't need to rely on anyone, nor have them rely on me. I'm perfectly capable all on my own.)
Lowering her gaze to the ground, Vira notices something at her feet and picks it up.
Vira: Is this... a doll? How did it get here?
Khinder: Oh! Er, you see...
Vira: It's yours? I had no idea you possessed such a hobby.
Vira brushes a spot of dirt off the doll and hands it to Khinder.
Khinder: ...
After staring at the doll in his hands for a moment, he silently passes it back to her.
Vira: What is this for?
Khinder: I made it myself, actually. To give to you as a present.
Vira: A present... for me?
Khinder: I've been thinking for a long time about how I could make you happy.
Khinder: With your talent, you can do everything so easily, unlike the rest of us brothers.
Khinder: But because of that, it seems like you're unable to find any goals or interests of your own.
Vira: That's silly...
Khinder: There's no point trying to hide it. As dim as I may be, I'm still your brother.
Khinder: I don't want you to go through the rest of your life looking so miserable.
Khinder: You like cute things, right? So I tried to come up with something along those lines.
Khinder: I wanted to find something I could do that would make you happy. And this doll is my answer.
Khinder: Will you accept it?
Vira: ...
Vira: Very well. So if I accept this gift, you'll be satisfied?
Khinder: What? Wait, that's not what I—
Vira: That was a joke.
Khinder: O-oh, it was? Sheesh, don't put me on the spot like that...
Vira: Hehe... Thank you, Khinder. I'll take good care of it.
Vira: My brother was always kind. Too kind, in fact.
Vira: I thought his personality was completely wrong for a merchant who needed to be able to negotiate prices and whatnot.
Vira: Despite that, my father selected him to be the next head of the family simply because he was the eldest son.
Vira: There was no place for me at home, so I left it behind. And then...
Khinder: Vira! Are you there, Vira?
Vira: ...!
Y-yes!
Khinder: Vira, come quick! Father's taken a turn for the worse!
Katalina: You'd better hurry. We'll wait here.
Vira: All right!
Hearing of her father's sudden change, Vira rushes to his room.
Free from the Fetters: Scene 3
With her father on the road to recovery, Vira decides to return to the ship, but she is stopped by Khinder who asks her to take over as family head. Much to his surprise, Vira politely declines, saying that she belongs at Katalina's side.
Hurrying to her father's side, Vira holds his hand as he groans in pain, saying a silent prayer for his recovery.
The minutes turn to hours, seeming to stretch into eternity.
Eventually the long night passes, and dawn breaks.
Vira: ...
Lyria: Vira!
As Vira emerges from her father's room looking exhausted, she is immediately greeted by (Captain) and the crew.
Vira: Wait... Don't tell me you all spent the entire night here waiting for me?
Vyrn: We couldn't just sit back and relax while your dad's life was in danger!
Katalina: On that note... how is your father?
Vira: It seems he's going to make it. So please rest assured.
Vyrn: Hey! Now, that's good news!
Vira: I'm terribly sorry for all the concern and inconvenience I've caused.
Katalina: Don't apologize. I'm just glad he's going to pull through.
Vira: As am I.
Vira: (Captain), I know you must be exhausted, but we should be on our way.
Vira: I've done what I came to do, and I'm sure you'll be able to rest much better on the ship than in an unfamiliar place.
Katalina: Are you sure? Shouldn't you at least say goodbye?
Vira: This isn't where I belong. My place is with—
Khinder: Vira!
Vira: Khinder...
Khinder: Are you leaving already?
Vira: Yes, I am. Please give Father my regards.
Khinder: ...
Khinder: I actually meant to ask you this yesterday, but...
Khinder: Would you consider succeeding as head of the family, Vira?
Vira: ...
What brought this on?
Khinder: The truth is, Father and I have been discussing it for the past several years.
Khinder: In the past, he had no intention of letting you take over as family head.
Khinder: No doubt you were aware of that.
Vira: Yes... I was.
Khinder: But he's since had a change of heart. After you became estranged, he began to regret the unfair treatment he showed you.
Khinder: And I agree with his decision. I believe you're the one who deserves it most... and this reunion has only strengthened that belief.
Khinder: So what do you think? Would you be willing to take over as head of the Lillie family in my place?
Vira: ...
Vira: To be honest, when we were children, I always thought I would be the one to fill our father's shoes.
Vira: It may have been fate then, in a sense, that has led to this unexpected turn of events.
Khinder: Does that mean—
Vira: However, I'm going to have to decline. Forgive me.
Khinder: Why? Are you worried about what our other brothers would think?
Vira: No. I've simply found a place to belong.
Khinder: What?
Vira: I'd be lying if I said I didn't hold a grudge against our father.
Vira: If he had expected anything from me in the beginning, I never would have left home.
Vira: But leaving is what led me to meet my dear Katalina in Albion.
Vira: That encounter brought color to my world and gave meaning to my very life.
Vira: I no longer have any interest in following in Father's footsteps. And besides...
Vira: There would be no point in my leaving Albion if I were simply to be tied down again in a different place.
Vira: I belong at Katalina's side.
Katalina: Vira...
Khinder: I see. It sounds like you've found someone you can really trust.
Khinder: I worked so hard to bring out that smile of yours, yet she does it with such ease.
Khinder: I understand. I'll explain the situation to Father.
Vira: I appreciate it.
Khinder: Take care, Vira. I hope we can stay in touch, even if it's just by letter.
Khinder: (Captain), everyone... look after Vira for me, won't you?
Vyrn: You bet! She's a precious part of the crew!
Vira: Goodbye, Khinder.
Vira bows her head politely and departs from the house with the crew.
Having put her past behind her, she is filled with a host of new emotions as she takes flight from her hometown once more.
Where Fate May Lead
Vira and Katalina visit Albion at Katalina's suggestion, reminiscing about old times as they take in the sights. A mural of Luminiera prompts Katalina to bring up something she's been meaning to tell Vira, but at that moment they are enveloped in a dazzling light.
Katalina: Being here sure takes me back. This place hasn't changed at all.
Vira: It certainly hasn't. The days I spent with you here feel like they were just yesterday.
Katalina and Vira stroll the familiar streets of Albion together.
Katalina: Just being able to see the sights with you like this was enough to make it worth stopping by.
Vira: (Thank goodness. I'm glad Katalina seems to be enjoying herself.)
Vira: (I was a little surprised when she made the suggestion though...)
A few days prior, Katalina had made a sudden proposition.
Katalina: What do you say we drop by Albion?
Vira: What? Where is this coming from?
Katalina: Well, you know how we visited your home the other day?
Katalina: That got me thinking about the past, and I thought it might be nice to spend some time reminiscing.
Vira: Ah, so that's what brought this up.
Vira: (I wouldn't have expected this. Our memories of Albion aren't exactly all bright and cheerful...)
Katalina: That's not the only reason though...
Vira: ...?
Did you say something?
Katalina: Oh, no. It's nothing.
Katalina: So... what do you think? If you're too busy, I won't force the issue.
Vira: Of course I'll accompany you. There's nothing that could possibly take precedence over my dear Katalina.
Thus Katalina and Vira make their way to Albion.
In order to avoid encountering anyone they know, they decide to visit in secret.
Katalina: Oh, I remember this restaurant. It's just the same as back then.
Vira: You used to take me here quite often.
Vira: The first time I visited, we sat at the third table from the window and shared a whitefish terrine.
Katalina: Really? I'm impressed you remember that far.
Vira: Naturally. All the memories I shared with you are etched firmly into my mind.
Vira: Would you like me to recite them all as proof?
Katalina: N-no, there's no need for that. I'm not sure I'd be able to tell if they were accurate or not in the first place...
Katalina: Anyway, I'm starting to get hungry. And it's just about time for lunch.
Katalina: Since we're here, why don't we have a meal together like we did back then?
Vira: That's a wonderful idea. However...
Vira: I actually had something else in mind. Could I ask you to indulge me just this once?
Katalina: ...?
Vira: Here you are, Katalina.
Katalina: Thanks.
After relocating to the military academy, the pair enjoy the sandwiches that Vira had brought along.
Katalina: Here we are at the academy, eating sandwiches side by side. Hehe, it's just like old times.
Katalina: You always come prepared—I had no idea you'd even gotten permission from the chancellor for us to visit. I can't seem to stop relying on you.
Vira: Please don't worry about that. I do it because I want to.
Katalina: Still, I appreciate it. To tell you the truth, I was wondering what sort of reason I could give when asking for permission myself.
Katalina: I was a little embarrassed to ask if we could visit just because I wanted to take a trip down memory lane.
Vira: That's so very like you. I assumed that might be the case, so I took the liberty of asking on your behalf.
Katalina: You always see right through me, don't you? It's impressive, to say the least.
Vira: Hehe. Thank you very much.
Vira: But in that sense, you're the same way.
Katalina: Hm? What do you mean?
Vira: Once back when we were students, spending time together just like this, you told me something...
Vira: You said that in the future, I would be surrounded by people. Do you remember?
Katalina: Yes, I do. And it turned out to be true.
Vira: I never dreamed my connection with the crew would last as long as it has.
Katalina: I'll have you know my prediction was right on the mark. It's all because of who you are.
Vira: No, not at all.
Vira: I was only able to forge those relationships because you were there with me.
Vira: You're the most important person in my life, just as you always have been.
Katalina: It's a little embarrassing hearing that to my face, but... thank you, Vira.
Katalina: Well, what do you say we take a walk around campus? We'll end up running into students if we don't wrap up while they're still in class.
After finishing their lunch, Katalina and Vira take a leisurely walk around the school building.
As they talk fondly of days gone by, Katalina comes to a sudden stop.
Katalina: This mural...
Following Katalina's gaze, Vira turns to see a piece of artwork depicting the figure of Luminiera.
Vira: What about it? We used to pass it every day when we were attending the academy.
Katalina: Ah, well... It's just...
Katalina: The land of Albion has long prospered under the benevolent watch of Luminiera...
Katalina: And I was just wondering what she'd think if she could see it in person.
Vira: Who exactly?
Katalina: I knew I'd have to tell you myself at some point. Maybe now is the time.
Vira: Katalina?
Katalina: It's related to your roots as well—
The moment Katalina speaks, the pair are suddenly enveloped in a dazzling light.
Vira feels her consciousness gradually begin to fade, as though it is being drawn in by the radiance.
Where Fate May Lead: Scene 2
In a world of memories, Vira comes face-to-face with Albion—Luminiera's first pact keeper and her own ancestor. Albion challenges Vira to a duel, doubtful that she is capable of protecting Katalina—Ares's descendent—but Vira's unwavering feelings change her mind.
Vira: ...
Vira: Is this... the arena? How did I get here?
Vira: When that mysterious light appeared, I felt my consciousness slipping away...
Vira: ...!
Where's Katalina!
Vira looks around in a panic, frowning as she realizes there isn't a single sign of life anywhere.
Vira: Strange... I never had many opportunities to come here, but it seems abnormally quiet...
Woman's Voice: That's because this is a world of memories.
Hearing a voice behind her, Vira spins around to see a woman standing there.
???: Don't worry. I'm not going to attack you without warning.
Vira: Who are you? You... look a lot like me...
???: It would be more accurate to say that you look like me.
Albion: My name is Albion.
Vira: Albion? That's the same name as this island...
Vira: Wait! Then you must be—
Albion: You're quite perceptive.
Vira: You're Luminiera's first pact keeper. The one who colonized this island...
Vira: But I couldn't possibly have any memories of you, not even of your appearance.
Vira: However, earlier you said this is a world of memories. Does that mean they belong to Luminiera?
Albion: That may be partly true. But the majority are those of Katalina and another...
Vira: Katalina! Please tell me—is she all right?
Albion: Yes, she's merely sleeping.
Vira clutches her chest with relief upon learning that Katalina is safe.
Vira: But why are we here in this place? Do you know?
Albion: As I'm nothing but a memory myself, I'm afraid I can't say for sure, but...
Albion: Actually, considering your capacity for insight, this would probably be easier if you knew the truth.
Albion: Could I ask you to close your eyes?
Vira: ...?
Though not without her reservations, Vira shuts her eyes as instructed.
The instant Albion reaches out to touch her forehead, a rush of memories come flooding into her mind.
The memories are those of the innermost teachings experienced by Katalina.
A woman named Ares who resembles Katalina... She speaks of Albion as her most faithful knight to whom she entrusted everything.
The way Albion looks at Ares... Vira's chest tightens as she realizes it's a different emotion from respect.
For a moment she is hit by a pang of sympathy, but then an even more shocking revelation shakes her to her very core.
Ares tells Katalina that she is "the child that met all her expectations."
She then goes on to explain about Albion... Although her words are not clear, Vira nevertheless understands their meaning.
Eventually the memories come to an end, and Vira slowly opens her eyes.
Vira: ...
Albion: You've proven yourself to be surprisingly perceptive. I'm sure you've already grasped a great deal.
Vira: The reason the two of us look so similar is because I'm your descendent... Is that right?
Albion: You seem to be at a loss.
Vira: Yes... I can't deny that.
Vira: But even so, I'm filled with a happiness that transcends words.
Vira: Katalina and I have shared a connection since long ago, haven't we?
Vira: I've never before now thought the word "fate" fit more perfectly.
Albion: I'm glad as well—glad that you happened across Katalina, within whom Ares's blood flows.
Albion: But at the same time... it's frustrating.
Albion: I can't help but think that if only this body had a physical form, I would be able to protect Katalina.
Vira: Are you saying... I'm not fit to protect her myself? That's how it sounds to me.
Albion: I have no doubt your feelings for Katalina are genuine.
Albion: But I'm proud to say that my feelings for Ares are even stronger.
Albion: Ares and I needed each other more than anyone else in the skies. Can you say the same?
Albion: You need Katalina, but does she need you?
Vira: ...!
Well...
Vira: (Thinking back, I'm always being helped by Katalina...)
Vira: (She mentioned that she relies on me as well, but to what extent, I wonder?)
Albion: ...
Albion: Draw your blade, Vira.
Vira: What?
Albion: I want to test your skill.
Albion: I need to know if you are truly worthy to stand beside Katalina, Ares's descendent.
Albion: This must be the reason why I've appeared before you.
Albion: Come, Vira. Show me your conviction.
Vira: Gladly!
Vira unsheathes her blade and closes the distance between herself and Albion in an instant.
Vira: Haaah!
Albion: I commend your swordsmanship. I sense no hesitation from it.
Albion: Now I suppose it's my turn.
Albion: Hyah!
Albion approaches Vira and commences her attack, moving deftly from side to side.
Vira: (I saw this fighting style in those memories! She distracts her opponent with her movements while—)
Albion: It's one thing to understand it, but quite another to contend with it.
Vira: ...!
Vira: Ngh!
Having been slow to react, Vira is blown away by Albion's swift strike.
Albion: I must say, I'm a little disappointed. Considering you've seen my fighting style in action, I expected better from you.
Vira: (I can see how she was Luminiera's first pact keeper. Her words weren't simple bravado...)
Vira: In that case, I'll use all the strength at my command!
Vira: Luminiera! Lend me your power!
Vira calls out to the primal beast, but there is no response.
Vira: Why? Luminiera, what's wrong!
Albion: It's no use. This world belongs to you and I alone. Luminiera cannot hear you.
Vira: ...!
Albion: You're not the type to give up simply because you've lost your trump card, are you?
Refusing to relent for even a moment, Albion resumes her assault.
Vira: Ngh!
Vira manages to deflect all of her blows, but not without great effort.
Vira: Huff... Puff...
Albion: You're certainly not weak. All it took was a few exchanges of blows to see that you have talent.
Albion: But you still don't stand a chance against me. My experience on the battlefield far exceeds your own.
Albion regards Vira with pity before speaking once more.
Albion: Don't you find it... painful?
Vira: What do you mean?
Albion: I'm sure you're already aware of my unspoken feelings for Ares...
Vira: ...
Albion: Isn't it strange? We're both in the same position, suffering from unrequited emotions.
Albion: Do you wish to remain at your loved one's side even if your heart's desire isn't granted, as I did?
Vira: If my desire isn't granted?
Vira: Hehe... What a foolish question.
Albion: How so?
Vira: I used to be completely dead inside. I spent my days wandering an ashen wasteland, unable to find any meaning in my life.
Vira: It was Katalina who brought color to my world.
Vira: I was sure it was fate. Though at the time, it may have been no more than a cliche.
Vira: But after seeing those memories, I've come to realize that my encounter was fate in the truest sense.
Vira: Now that I have such certainty, how could I possibly find it painful? Nothing could give me greater joy.
Albion: I see. It seems I've misjudged you.
Albion: In that case, there's no need for any further discussion. Let's settle this.
Vira: Yes. Let's.
Vira: Haaah!
Vira: We may be descendants of you and Ares, but Katalina is her own person, as am I!
Vira: No matter what obstacles I may face, I wish to spend my every remaining moment at Katalina's side.
Vira: I won't let anyone take that away from me!
The force of Vira's full-on attack knocks Albion's sword out of her hand with ease.
Albion: A magnificent performance. Is this the result of your conviction?
Albion: If you can exhibit such power for the sake of your beloved, it seems my worries are unfounded.
Vira: Why did you ease up? It's clear you had no intention of guarding against my attack.
Albion: I didn't intend to ease up. I merely wished to see your resolve for myself.
Albion: In the end, I'm nothing but a memory. No matter how strong my desire to protect Ares's progeny may be, there's nothing I can do.
Albion: So whatever happens, please stay by her side—the side of the person most precious to you...
As Albion vanishes, Vira's vision fades along with her, until all is pure white.
Where Fate May Lead: Scene 3
After awakening, Vira tells Katalina about her experience. Katalina confesses that she wants Vira to follow her own path, free from fate, but Vira makes it clear that her feelings for Katalina are her sole motivator. Touched, Katalina privately vows to protect Vira's smile.
???: ...!
Vira!
Vira: Is that... Katalina?
Katalina: Vira! Are you all right?
Vira: ...!
I'm back?
Katalina: Thank goodness! You're finally awake!
Katalina: What in the skies happened? It looked like you were having some sort of nightmare...
Vira: Well...
Vira: Actually, may I ask you something? Did anything strange happen just now?
Katalina: As a matter of fact, yes... I apparently lost consciousness as well until just a moment ago. I feel perfectly normal though.
Vira: I see. Well, I'm relieved you're all right.
Vira: I've had a rather... interesting experience. Would you mind if I told you about it?
Katalina: Not at all... But tell me, does it have anything to do with that thing in your hand?
Vira: What?
Vira looks down at her right hand to see an axe held tightly in its grasp.
Vira: Certificus...
Vira: (How peculiar... I've never seen this weapon before, and yet somehow I know its name...)
Vira: (Perhaps it's the result of Luminiera's power? But that's not all. This presence I sense is... hers.)
Katalina: Vira?
Vira: Katalina. First allow me to apologize.
Vira: I've witnessed the memories of what you experienced during the innermost teachings.
Katalina: ...!
Katalina: I see. So you must have seen Ares and Albion as well...
Vira: Yes.
Katalina: Then I suppose I have nothing more to hide.
Katalina: The real reason I wanted to visit Albion was to show Ares this place.
Katalina: She no longer retains her soul in her current form, but I wanted to do what I could to repay her.
Katalina: Our visit to your hometown really is part what gave me the idea, but I'm sorry I wasn't completely honest with you.
Vira: There's no need for you to apologize. If anything, I'm grateful.
Vira: Through this experience, I was able to learn that the connection we share was forged long ago—that our meeting was fate...
Vira: Just knowing that is the greatest joy I could possibly imagine.
Katalina: Fate...
Katalina: In all honesty, I'm happy we have this mysterious connection as well.
Katalina: But at the same time... I'm worried. Worried that my existence will be a hindrance to you.
Katalina: After all... your life is your own.
Katalina: It's not determined by any sort of destiny, much less ties from the past.
Katalina: When you find what you truly desire someday, I want you to follow your own path, free from the shackles of fate.
Vira: Katalina...
Vira: I think you're misunderstanding something.
Katalina: Vira?
Vira: The word "fate" merely functions as something of a tailwind for me.
Vira: I'm not bound by it, by any means. I simply act according to my conviction and what I see with my own eyes.
Vira: That hasn't changed since the moment we met. I adore you, Katalina, from the bottom of my heart.
Katalina: ...
Vira: I apologize for prattling on so long. We ought to be returning to the ship.
Vira: And I know you said you feel fine, but since you did lose consciousness, you should probably see a doctor just to be safe.
Katalina: R-right...
Vira: Let's be off, Katalina.
As she watches Vira turn to walk away with a smile, a voice pops into Katalina's mind—
A memory from out of a dream.
Vira's Voice: No matter what obstacles I may face, I wish to spend my every remaining moment at Katalina's side.
Vira's Voice: I won't let anyone take that away from me!
Katalina: ...
Katalina: (Vira never ceases to amaze me.)
Katalina: (She made her choice perfectly clear in response to Ares's and Albion's feelings...)
Katalina: (I can't afford to hesitate or gloss over things any longer either.)
Katalina clenches her fist tightly, as though attempting to grasp something unseen.
Katalina: (I'm not concerned with following in my ancestors' footsteps. I just want to respond to Vira's feelings, like Ares once did for Albion.)
Katalina: (I don't know what I can do. But even so...)
Vira: Hehe. Is something the matter, Katalina?
Katalina: (I'll do whatever it takes to protect the smile of this precious person who said she wanted to be by my side...)
Katalina: No... Nothing at all. Let's go, Vira.
As Katalina feels her heart stirred by Vira's determination, the two set out walking side by side.
What will come of their feelings for each other, only time will tell.
