Tears of the Horned

Vanzza, the winner of a street fight, declines a request to go monster hunting, so (Captain) and company take on the request instead. But when the request proves harder than expected, Vanzza comes to the rescue. When he learns why the crew is traveling, he decides to join.

(Captain) and company visit a town to go shopping.
The town square is full of excited people watching a street fighting competition with prize money at stake.
Lyria: Wow! That crowd seems really into it!
Vyrn: Yeah! Let's go take a look! Come on, (Captain)!
The crew finds a good spot to watch just as the judge announces the beginning of the next match.
???: Only those willing to risk their lives should fight here. Are you willing to do that?
Brawler: Of course. I wouldn't be here if I weren't.
???: Hah... It was a foolish question. Here I come then!
Wielding a pair of tonfas, the man lunges at his opponent with frightful speed and ducks past his guard.
Brawler: What? How did—
???: Aaaghh!
The man's bestial roar makes the very air reverberate. His weapons land with an echoing crack.
Brawler: ...
His opponent's eyes roll up into his head, and he crumples to the ground unconscious.
The large man wielding the tonfas catches him before he can hit the ground and gently lays him down.
???: With respect.
Judge: W-Wow! And the winner is... Vanzza!
Vyrn: That dude with the tonfas is amazing! He leveled that guy with one blow!
While the crew stands there in awe of his fighting style, a young man darts out of the crowd.
Young Man: Excuse me, Vanzza? I have a favor to ask you!
Young Man: A lot of monsters have suddenly appeared near my village, and it's only a matter of time before we get attacked!
Young Man: Can I hire you to protect my village? I'm sure you'd be strong enough to handle it!
Vanzza: I refuse. You'll have to find someone else.
Vanzza: I don't make promises or form contracts lightly. I'm also in the middle of a journey and can't afford to get sidetracked.
Young Man: But I promised everyone in the village I'd bring back someone strong!
Young Man: You just have to help us! If you don't, even my family could be in danger...
Vanzza: Find someone else.
Vanzza gently peels the young man off of him, turns his back, and begins to walk away.
Vanzza: It's enough to make you cry.
Vyrn: What's up with his attitude? He could have helped the poor guy. What a heartless jerk!
Lyria: Um... But he actually looked like he was crying...
Vyrn: You can't be serious. Didn't you see how cold he was?
Lyria: Hmm... You might be right. I guess I could be mistaken.
Young Man: Damn it... Now what am I supposed to do? Everyone's at risk...
Lyria: Why don't we take the job instead, (Captain)?
(Captain) nods in assent, and the crew heads to the young man's village.
That night, a horde of monsters closes in on the village.
Monsters: Gwoar!
Faced with more foes than expected, the crew struggles to hold them back but is soon surrounded.
Vyrn: Um... Guys? I think we might be in trouble here.
But just as they begin to lose hope, they hear a familiar bestial roar.
Vanzza: Aaaghh!
Monsters: Grngh!
Lyria: Isn't that... Vanzza?
Vyrn: Okay! That broke their line, (Captain)! We gotta slip through so we can regroup!
Once the crew has gotten clear of the monsters, Vanzza rejoins them.
Vyrn: What's up? Didn't you say you can't get sidetracked?
Vanzza: I just happened to be passing this way. The monsters were blocking my path, so I got rid of them.
Vanzza: But kids like you should be asleep at this hour. Tell me where you're headed, and I'll escort you home.
(Captain) just stares at him, refusing to run away and abandon the village to its fate.
Vanzza: For one so young, you don't lack conviction.
So saying, Vanzza casts an eye over the nearby monsters.
Vanzza: Well... So many monsters roaming the area would clearly be an impediment to travel.
Vanzza: I obviously can't continue on my way without disposing of them first. Don't you think?
(Captain) nods and teams up with Vanzza to fight the monsters.
When the threat has been eliminated, the crew returns to the young man's village.
Young Man: Thank you for saving our village!
Young Man: And I see you came along too, Vanzza. Thank you so much!
Vanzza: If you must thank someone, thank these guys. I was just cleaning up the trash so I could travel in peace.
Vyrn: Haha... Don't be that way! You intended to help all along, didn't you?
Vanzza: Don't make me laugh. I have no goodwill. I simply took them out because they were an obstacle to my journey.
Vyrn: Hmm... Your journey, huh?
Lyria: Um... Why are you traveling, Vanzza?
Vanzza: For Carolla... No... in search of a certain man, to make him take responsibility for what he's done.
Vyrn: Huh? Who's Carolla?
Vanzza: She's the woman I love.
Vyrn: Hehe. So you've got a girlfriend!
Vanzza: Don't joke around.
Lyria: Do you have any clues about where the man you're looking for might be?
Vanzza: Not a one. But what difference does it make to you?
Lyria: Maybe we could help you.
(Captain) nods in agreement.
Vanzza: What are you talking about?
The crew members tell the suspicious Vanzza that they're skyfarers and briefly explain their journey thus far.
Vanzza: I see... So as you search for your father...
Vanzza: You're also heading to Estalucia for Lyria's sake...
Vanzza: It's enough to make you cry.
Vyrn: Huh? What's wrong, Tonfa Bro?
Vanzza: Nothing at all. More importantly... I now see that I could gather information more easily with you than on my own.
Vanzza: But why do you want to help me? I don't get it.
(Captain) explains that Vanzza can consider it a thank-you for helping the crew out.
Lyria: That's right! We want to thank you properly!
Vanzza: A thank-you, huh? I guess I can see where you're coming from.
Vanzza: And I can certainly go from island to island faster if you help me.
Vanzza: Fine then. I'll go with you.
Lyria: Really? Yay!
Vanzza: But this doesn't mean that I'm your friend.
Vyrn: Huh? What do you mean?
Vanzza: I don't make promises or form contracts lightly. And that's because I'm not quick to trust others.
Vanzza: You can't be friends with people you don't trust, can you?
Vyrn: I guess that's true, but...
Vanzza: I'm only agreeing to this because our interests are aligned. There's no need for you to help me as some misguided show of gratitude.
Vanzza: This is a simple business transaction. In exchange for letting me fly with you, I'll help with whatever I can instead of paying a fare.
Vanzza: I also think you all are too nice. You should really save your kindness for friends you can trust.
Vanzza: I'm serious... You've barely known me for a day.
  1. We can already trust each other!
  2. I won't apologize for being kind to the core!

Choose: We can already trust each other!

Vanzza: What if I turn out to be a bad guy?
Lyria: That could never happen! You're a good guy, Vanzza!
Vanzza: Don't be so sure. I'm warning you that you need to think these things through.
Vanzza: At any rate, I don't need your gratitude. You got that?

Choose: I won't apologize for being kind to the core!

Vanzza: Whoa... You're more adamant about it than I expected.
Vyrn: Haha! He's not wrong. You and Lyria are kind to a fault!
Vanzza: At any rate, I don't need your gratitude. You got that?

Lyria: Um... If you say so...
Lyria and (Captain) agree but seem rather defeated about it.
Vanzza scratches his cheek distractedly and sighs, clearly conflicted.
Vanzza: But you know... If you really want to thank me for helping out, I guess I could go for a cake. A gigantic one.
Lyria: What? A cake?
Vanzza: What's wrong with that? It's my favorite food.
Vyrn: You just... don't look like a guy with a sweet tooth.
Vyrn: Hehe... Sounds like we have some shopping to do tomorrow morning.
Vanzza: Don't forget the strawberries. Cake with strawberries on top is my favorite.
Lyria: Hee hee... Got it!
(Captain) and the others relax, happy to have seen another side of their new shipmate, Vanzza. They excitedly begin to discuss what sort of cake to bake.
Vanzza: Carolla... I think I may have to watch over these kids for a while...
Vanzza sighs as he listens to the crew's chatter, murmuring under his breath as if a certain someone were listening.
But his expression is calm, and he smiles right along with them.
