Making Her Decision

While walking with the crew, Shura is surprised to see her foster father, who gives her a letter from Leonis. The letter is an order from the king to capture a certain aristocrat involved with embezzling relief supplies. Little does the crew know that the criminal is none other than the foster father of Renfa, Shura's sister.

Zaha, Erdeni's port city, suffered a great deal of damage from the war.
(Captain) and the crew are now staying in the city along with Shura to help with its reconstruction.
???: It's been a long time, Shura. I'm glad you're looking well.
Shura: ...!
Vyrn: You know this guy, Shura?
Shura: O-oh, yes... When I was young, he took me in and brought me back with him to Sphiria. He's my foster father.
Shura: But Father... why are you here? I thought you were supposed to be in Sphiria...
Shura's Father: It's work. I'm here with the army.
Shura's Father: Sphiria decided to send an investigation team to examine the recently found relics dating back to the time of the creation myth.
Shura's Father: My unit was assigned to protect the investigation team during their mission.
Shura: But is it really necessary for you to accompany them?
Shura: I'd understand if this were a battle, but surely there's no need for someone of your rank to be on the scene for a mere escort mission.
Shura's Father: That was a bit of a selfish request on my part. I'd originally planned to come to Erdeni regardless of my mission.
Shura: To Erdeni? But for what reason would you...
Shura's father chuckles at his daughter's quizzical expression.
Shura's Father: Well, it should go without saying that I wanted to come and make sure you were safe.
Shura's Father: Ever since you went off to Erdeni, you haven't sent me a single message.
Shura: I-I'm terribly sorry, Father. I must have worried you...
Shura's Father: It's not a big deal. I'm glad you're doing well.
Shura: Thank you...
Shura gives a slight bow.
Shura: Then allow me to show you the way to where the relics are being stored—
Shura's Father: Actually, there's one more thing I'm here for.
Shura's father takes a letter from his breast pocket.
Shura's Father: When I went to deliver my greetings to King Leonis, he asked me to pass this on to you.
Shura: From His Majesty? I wonder what it could be.
Shura breaks the seal on the letter and slides the paper out from the envelope. She swiftly scans the contents of the message.
Shura: I see... I did predict something of this sort would happen sooner or later...
Shura: Huh?
As she murmurs to herself, her eyes stop at a particular section of the letter.
Vyrn: What's the matter? That face you're makin' tells me it's not just your regular greeting card...
Shura: O-oh, no, it's nothing.
After seeing her father off, Shura stands with a slight frown, lost in thought.
Vyrn: Hey, you sure there's nothin' wrong? You're lookin' pretty worried there...
Vyrn: If you need anythin', we're here for ya. Right, (Captain)?
(Captain) nods in agreement.
At their words of encouragement, Shura looks slightly relieved.
Shura: I appreciate your kind sentiments, (Captain).
Shura: Then if it isn't too much, I'd like to ask for your assistance once again.
Shura unfolds the letter from Leonis and shows it to the crew.
The letter is an order from the king to seize a certain aristocrat involved with the embezzlement of relief supplies, and to do it quickly but discreetly.
Vyrn: But why would he want us to do it? Wouldn't it be faster to just ask his own soldiers?
Shura: Since this requires swiftness and discretion, we would need to select the most elite members of our army.
Shura: However, all of our soldiers have been busy with the aftermath of the war, so gathering the appropriate people for this mission would take time.
Shura: That is why I would like to ask all of you to help with this mission instead.
Shura straightens up and looks earnestly at the crew before bowing her head.
Shura: (Captain), we need you. Won't you lend your strength to Erdeni once more?
  1. You betcha!
  2. Can't stop us now.

Choose: You betcha!

Lyria: Of course! I'm happy you're entrusting this to us!
Lyria: We'll do whatever we can to help, Shura!

Choose: Can't stop us now.

Vyrn: Couldn't have said it better myself! There's no turning back!
Vyrn: Y'know what they say. A friend in need is a friend indeed!

Shura: Oh, thank you so, so much...
Shura expresses her gratitude with another deep bow.
Shura: Please give me some time to organize the information we have before deciding on our plan of action.
Shura gives a final bow to the crew before hurrying off.
Clutched in her hand is another piece of paper—the second part of the letter that she did not show the crew.
In the latter half of his message, Leonis writes that the aristocrat involved with the embezzlement is none other than the adopted father of Renfa, Shura's sister.
Shura: Renfa's foster father...
Shura's grip tightens, the paper crinkling in her hand.
Shura: Who would have thought we would come to meet under these circumstances...
Shura whispers these words to herself and stops in her tracks.
She looks up at the sky, her face clouding over with a mixture of anger and regret.

Making Her Decision: Scene 2

(Captain) and company follow Shura to the aristocrat's residence and infiltrate it. The aristocrat, Velde, attempts to escape, but Shura knocks him out before he is able to do so. The crew hurries to tie the criminal up before he wakes.

Upon accepting their new mission from Shura, (Captain) and the crew make their way to where the aristocrat's mansion is located.
Vyrn: So what's the plan?
Shura: All of us will break in at the same time and capture the target.
Shura: According to an earlier investigation, quite a large number of employees and guards are stationed around the house.
Shura: However, the house is built in a way that once we manage to infiltrate it, we won't need to worry about our disadvantage in number.
Shura: That is why I decided that a small number of elite fighters would be optimal for this mission.
Shura: After we have successfully captured the target, our remaining soldiers will surround the house.
Shura: Further resistance will be futile once we have their employer arrested and the area surrounded. The situation should resolve itself from there.
Vyrn: But what if the rich guy escapes through a secret passage or somethin'?
Shura: No need to worry. I have already put that into consideration.
Shura: I've positioned soldiers disguised as civilians at every passage exit and throughout the city.
Shura: Even if he manages to slip out of the house, he won't be able to get out of this city.
Unconcerned, Shura explains her plan thoroughly to the crew. (Captain) and the others exchange glances.
  1. Okay, let's give it a try then.
  2. Is this really gonna be okay?

Choose: Is this really gonna be okay?

Shura: I understand it is a lot to ask, but I hope you will put your trust in me.
Shura looks at (Captain) with sincere eyes.
Vyrn: Well, guess we just gotta do it... Can't think of a better plan anyway.
Lyria: I'm sure it'll be fine. Shura's the one who thought of this plan.
Lyria: And we know she's a fantastic strategist!
Hearing Vyrn and Lyria's words of encouragement, (Captain) finally nods.

Choose: Okay, let's give it a try then.

Shura: Thank you, (Captain). Then let us begin this operation.
(Captain) and company infiltrate the aristocrat's house according to Shura's plan.
Suppressing the various guards they encounter along the way, the crew swiftly make their way to the aristocrat's private quarters.
Shura: That's his room over there. Charge!
They kick the door in and rush into the room.
???: Eek!
Inside the room, (Captain) and the others find a man frantically stuffing a number of documents and valuables into a bag.
???: Th-those useless idiots! I pay them a fortune and they can't even buy me a bit of time!
The man curses and pulls out a sword, whipping it out in front of him.
???: Do you lot know who I am? I could have your heads in an instant if I wanted—
???: Huh? Wait... Aren't you...
Shura: It seems there won't be any need to introduce myself. Then let's get down to business, shall we?
Shura thrusts her weapon at the man, the tip of it stopping just an inch from his throat.
Shura: Lord Velde. As per the king's orders, I hereby put you under arrest for the embezzlement of relief supplies.
Shura: If you come quietly, I can guarantee your safety.
Shura: However, if you resist, I cannot promise that you will leave this place unharmed.
Velde: D-don't make me laugh!
Velde: Me? Arrested for such a petty thing? You think I'm gonna let that happen!
Shura: That is not for you to decide.
Shura: If you wish to explain yourself, you may do so in front of His Majesty.
Shura: Although, as gracious as our king is, I doubt he will sympathize with your motives.
Velde: N-no! I can't let it end here... This is me we're talking about!
With a scream of rage, Velde swings his sword at Shura.
Shura: I don't think so!
Shura easily parries his attack with her blade and, in the blink of an eye, strikes the rampaging aristocrat on the side of his head.
Velde: Ergh!
Vyrn: W-whoa there!
Shura: Don't worry, I merely struck him with the back of my weapon.
Shura: Let's capture him while we can. It will be troublesome if he wakes up and starts struggling again.
Still lost in wonder at Shura's flawless movements, the crew hurries to tie up the unconscious man.

Making Her Decision: Scene 3

A swarm of monsters attacks the city, and Velde manages to escape among the chaos. While Shura goes to give instructions on exterminating the monsters, (Captain) and company chase after Velde. The aristocrat reveals that he was responsible for sending Shura's parents to their execution.

(Captain) and company succeed in capturing the target.
They head outside the house to wait for the cart Shura has arranged to take Velde away.
Soldier 1: Shura, preparations are complete.
Shura: Good work. Take him away.
Soldier 1: Yes, ma'am!
Velde: L-let go of me! Keep your hands off me! How much do you want? Name your price! Just let me go!
The soldiers throw Velde into the back of the horse-drawn cart before hopping onto the front and driving away.
Shura: Whew... And that completes our mission. (Captain), thank you very much for your cooperation.
Shura smiles at the crew and bows.
Shura: Well then, we should head back—
Suddenly, a bloodcurdling howl pierces the air.
Shura: ...!
What is that?
Soldier 2: Shura! It's an emergency!
Soldier 2: Monsters! A swarm of monsters has invaded the city...
Monster: Groooar!
Civilian 1: H-help me... Ahhh!
Civilian 2: N-no, please... Help... Eeeek!
Civilian 3: S-stay away! Don't come near me!
Shura: We'll exterminate the monsters and rescue the civilians at once. Change formation to—
Soldier 3: Ma'am! We've just received a report that the cart transporting Lord Velde was attacked by monsters and destroyed!
Soldier 3: Lord Velde was seen to have escaped into the forest amid the chaos!
Shura: What about the men driving the cart?
Soldier 3: It seems they suffered some serious injuries, but all of them have been accounted for. They're currently being treated at headquarters.
Shura looks distressed at the soldier's report.
Shura: Understood. Have all of our soldiers on hand assist with the monster extermination and evacuation of civilians.
Soldier 3: Yes, ma'am. What should we do about Lord Velde?
Shura: It is the military's duty to protect the people. I will take responsibility for Lord Velde and go after him.
Shura: I can—
  1. Leave it to us!

Choose: Leave it to us!

Vyrn: We'll go catch that rich guy for ya!
Shura: B-but... this all happened because I failed to take this possibility into consideration beforehand.
Shura: How could I ask all of you to bear the consequences of my miscalculation...
Vyrn: Come on, we don't have time for that! If we split up the work, we can catch the guy and save all those people in the city!
Shura: ...!
It takes a moment for Vyrn's words to sink in. Shura finally sighs and straightens up.
Shura: You are right.
Shura: Then, (Captain), I will entrust this matter to you.
Shura: Once I have the situation in the city under control, I will catch up with all of you.
(Captain) nods and turns to head toward the forest where the soldiers last saw Velde.
The crew tread through the thick trees in search of Velde.
After a while, they catch sight of the figure of a man creeping between the tree trunks.
Velde: Huff... Huff... This... can't be the end for me!
Velde: Huff... Huff... They'll never... find me... I won't let them.
Velde: Just watch. Someday I'll come back and...
Vyrn: There he is, (Captain)!
Velde: ...!
You lot tracked me down?
Frightened by the sight of the crew, Velde breaks into a run.
But in a flash, (Captain) closes the distance and tackles Velde to the ground.
Velde: Argh! Why you... Get off me! Let me go!
Vyrn: Come on, just give up and let us catch ya already!
Velde continues to struggle, trying to squirm out of (Captain)'s grasp.
Lyria and Vyrn quickly fling some ropes around him and secure them with a tight knot.
Lyria: There! Now you can't run away anymore!
Velde: Ack! So close... I was so close!
Velde: All I needed was their heads... then I could've lived the life I've always wanted in Zilantos!
Velde glares venomously at the crew.
Vyrn: Huh? Just whaddya mean by that?
Shura: This man had been planning to bring Renfa and Luhua's heads with him and defect to Zilantos.
Shura comes up from behind them to answer their question.
Lyria: Shura! Is everything all right in Zaha?
Shura: Yes. I have rearranged our units and chain of command. Things are under control.
Shura: I've also called for reinforcements from other units stationed close by. We should have the monsters exterminated in no time.
Shura shifts her cold gaze to Velde, who is huddled on the ground.
Shura: In a country like Zilantos where personal merit is said to be valued, by offering up the heads of their most wanted criminals, he could guarantee high status for himself.
Shura: But it was a foolish and poorly thought-out plan—as one would expect from someone who only has eyes for money and status.
Shura's younger sister, Renfa, and formerly the strongest general of Zilantos, Luhua.
They are currently Zilantos's most wanted criminals for the assassination of the country's king.
Shura: You were gathering the necessary funds to do so through the embezzlement of supplies...
Shura: Furthermore, for the sake of raising your own status, you planned to use Renfa...
Shura: Renfa, your own adopted daughter... Absolutely despicable.
Velde: Hmph. Why should I have any special feelings toward that thing?
Velde: It is a servant. Servants are tools for their masters. How I decide to use my tools is up to me.
Lyria: A tool? How could you say that... That's terrible!
Velde: Terrible? What's terrible is that girl I took in!
Velde: You have no idea how much I've lost because of her... Commoners like you wouldn't understand!
Velde: She was stupid and uneducated, but her looks were the finest. That's why I bought her!
Velde: That weasel never learned her place. She just had to go and sink her claws into a man from the enemy... and then betray the entire country!
Velde: That's why I charged the girl's real parents and had them executed!
Velde: I had them take the responsibility for her actions—to their graves!
Shura: Executed?
Shura's brow furrows at Velde's words.
Shura: But Renfa's real parents were killed in the war...
Velde: I told you. The responsibility that would have fallen on my shoulders...
Velde: For her deception, killing officials, betraying the country...
Velde: I had her parents take it all instead.
Shura: Is... Is that so...
A look of remorse washes over Shura's face as mixed feelings churn inside her.
Shura: Truly, I have nothing but regrets. If only I hadn't gone to another family, but stayed with Renfa and our parents instead...
Shura: I was the only one who could protect Renfa... If only I had enough power then to turn you away...
Velde: Protect the girl? But why would you...
Velde: Wait... Now that you mention it, that girl did say something about having an older sister who left after being adopted...
Velde: That must mean you're...
Shura: Who I am is no longer your business.
The sound of footsteps grows louder as Shura's soldiers appear from behind the trees and surround the area.
Velde: Let... Let me go! I'm not done!
The soldiers grab Velde and drag the flailing man away, his cries fading into the distance.
Shura: Perhaps this will bring some closure...
Shura whispers to herself as the forest around her grows quiet once more.

Making Her Decision: Scene 4

Shura apologizes to the crew for all the trouble that happened, but (Captain) and the others remind her that everyone is here to help her. A few days later, Shura visits her parents at their grave and thinks about how she should live her life from here on out.

With the incident finally resolved, the crew breathes a sigh of relief.
Vyrn: Phew... Well, that's one case closed.
Shura: Indeed. I'm terribly sorry for all the trouble I have caused all of you.
Shura lowers her head in apology.
Shura: The capture of Lord Velde should have been my responsibility.
Shura: But my power alone proved to be insufficient, and we were only able to resolve this with your support.
Shura: All of this was a result of my inexperience. Please accept my deepest apologies.
Lyria: Don't worry about it! Nobody would have guessed that a swarm of monsters would start attacking the city...
Shura: No... It is my duty to think of every possible situation and be prepared to handle any unexpected occurrences.
Shura: I was unable to make the correct judgment in the heat of the moment. The mistake is clearly mine.
Shura: I must focus and work harder. I need the power to protect what's dear to me with my own two hands...
Shura quietly murmurs to herself, an expression of anguish on her face as she looks down at the ground.
  1. Can't be done.
  2. That's pretty arrogant of you.

Choose: Can't be done.

Lyria: Shura, (Captain)'s right.
Lyria: There's only so much you can do by yourself...
Lyria: That's why you should depend more on other people. We're here for you! I'm sure we can handle anything if we do it together!
Go to "Continue 1"

Choose: That's pretty arrogant of you.

Shura: Arrogant?
Vyrn: Well, sounds to me like you think you can do everythin' without anyone's help.
Vyrn: But why take it on all alone when we're right here with ya? We can do it together!

Continue 1

Shura: ...
Shura: Do it... together?
Shura: That... has never occurred to me before.
Shura: I've always assumed that I need to be able to handle everything myself...
Shura looks thoughtful, a hint of hesitation in her eyes.
Shura: I'm sorry. I understand what all of you are trying to say, but it's difficult to change the way I think so suddenly...
Lyria: No, I'm sorry... We're being kind of pushy, aren't we?
Lyria: But I hope you can depend on us more!
Vyrn: You've got more than enough on your plate! Share some of it with us!
Shura: Haha... Yes, you may be right.
Shura: I will take what you've said into consideration. Then perhaps, little by little, I will try to open up more...
Shura breaks into a smile, relief washing over her as if a large burden has been lifted.
Several days later.
After some investigation, Shura is able to locate where her parents are buried and goes to pay them a visit.
Shura: Father. Mother. It's been a while.
Shura: I'm sorry I couldn't come see you after leaving for Sphiria...
Shura: If you wanted to scold my lack of filial piety, I could hardly blame you.
Shura crouches before a small pile of stones that mark her parents' grave and places the flowers she brought beside it.
She closes her eyes and offers up a silent prayer.
After some time, Shura slowly stands up, her expression somber.
Shura: Actually, there's something I want to talk to you about today.
Shura: It's about Lord Velde... The man who took in Renfa, and sent you to your execution...
Shura: It turns out he never thought of Renfa as anything but a tool.
Shura: Father... Mother...
Shura: I've regretted it ever since I heard that Renfa betrayed our country.
Shura: If only I hadn't gone out to work... and agreed to be adopted by another family... I could have stayed by her side.
Shura: If only I'd had the power to protect what's important to me... then maybe Renfa would've been able to live a proper life.
Shura's breath catches as she thinks back to what her sister said to her on the battlefield.
Renfa: You're so arrogant! You blame yourself for everything that goes wrong! Even if it was something that I did!
Renfa: You have no idea how miserable and pathetic that makes me feel!
Renfa: My actions are my own responsibility! Not yours!
Shura: I always thought that... it was my fault she ended up on the wrong path.
Shura: That we were always poor even though we worked so much because I didn't earn enough.
Shura: That Renfa refused to do anything because I didn't teach her well enough.
Shura: But you know... she told me that I was being arrogant.
Shura: (Captain) and the others told me the same thing.
Shura: I just... I didn't want to lose anything.
Shura: That's why I wanted to be able to do anything and everything. I wanted the power to protect what was important to me.
Shura: But Renfa and the others made me realize that trying to do everything by myself really was arrogant of me.
Shura takes a deep breath and closes her eyes for a brief moment. She opens them again to gaze at her parents' grave.
Shura: So... I'm going to try to think differently. I want to change how I live, and how I am.
Shura: How can I live in a way that I won't regret? How can I protect what's important to me?
Shura: I'm going to keep that in mind from now on. I hope you'll continue to watch over me, Father. Mother.
Shura makes a quiet promise in front of the grave.
Her only wish remains the same. But the path she walks to achieve this wish is beginning to change, little by little.
Whether this change will bring Shura closer to her ideals...
Only the future can tell.
