Just the Way You Are

Lyria suggests that Orchid head into town for inspiration, but nothing seems to fit. Shortly after, they find a little girl in front of a bakery looking troubled.

Orchid: Something to make Apollo happy...
Orchid puzzles over what to give Apollo in return for her gift.
Orchid: Lyria said food, but...
Orchid: I've eaten with Apollo before, yet I don't know what it is she likes...
Vyrn: She doesn't seem like the type to complain about food.
Orchid: You're right. Apollo isn't a picky eater.
Orchid: She's much stronger and wiser than I am... I could never...
Orchid: Is there anything someone like me could even give to her?
Orchid goes silent once again, thinking to herself.
Lyria: Oh, I know! Let's go into town!
Orchid: Into town?
Lyria: Maybe some window shopping will inspire you to come up with something!
Vyrn: Yeah, that makes sense—let's do it!
Orchid: Understood. Let's go.
Lyria: Okay! Just follow us, Orchid!
(Captain) and the others take Orchid into town.
Vyrn: See anything good?
Orchid: Hmm...
Orchid: I don't know.
Orchid looks around hoping to find an object of interest, but nothing seems to fit.
Lyria: Hmm, let's see...
Young Man: U-um, this flower—and this one! Oh, and the orange one over there!
Young Man: There, perfect! Not as perfect as my girlfriend's smile, of course!
Florist: Would you like a ribbon with your purchase, sir?
Young Man: Oh, yes, of course! It's a gift for my girlfriend! Although not for long, hopefully—I think I'm gonna pop the question, see...
Young Man: Sheesh, I'm already sweating...
Young Man: I just really hope she likes them, you know?
Vyrn: Looks like that guy's getting a present for someone too.
Orchid: He said those flowers were like his girlfriend's smile.
Lyria: Do you think it'd be easier to find inspiration from the people buying the gifts instead?
Orchid: You may be on to something there, Lyria.
Vyrn: Okay! Let's go ahead and check out some other stores with that in mind!
Father: It's for my daughter—she keeps asking for a stuffed rabbit wearing a bow, but...
Father: Does the bow go on its ears? No... It's gotta be the neck, right?
Father: How adorable would it be if they matched with her hair though?
Girl: My best friend is moving far away, so I wanna get her something before she goes.
Girl: Something to remember me by...
Girl: Hmm... Oh! I could get the same thing for the both of us!
Girl: That way we'll stay connected, even if we're far apart!
Boy: Oh, this one! Let's get this one!
Mother: That's just the flavor you like, isn't it? This is for your grandfather, remember?
Boy: But this way we can both eat them together!
Mother: Together, huh? You know, I think he'd really like that.
Orchid: Everyone's putting so much thought into their gifts.
Lyria: Yeah... It all depends on the person, after all.
Vyrn: Get any ideas yet?
Orchid: To me, Apollo is...
Orchid: She isn't exactly my mother, nor is she my lover...
As she considers her options, someone catches Orchid's eye.
Orchid: Oh?
Little Girl: Oh no...
Orchid: That girl.
Vyrn: Huh? What's up?
Orchid: The girl in front of the cake shop... She needs help.
Lyria: Oh... What's a little girl like that doing all by herself?
  1. She must be lost.
  2. She's about to cry.

Choose: She must be lost.

Orchid: A lost child? We must help her.

Just the Way You Are: Scene 2

The little girl had come to the bakery to buy a cake for her parents after feeling neglected since the arrival of her younger brother. Orchid suggests that she write down how she feels in a letter, and joins her to write one for Apollonia.

Orchid: Are you okay?
The girl looks up in response to Orchid's voice.
Little Girl: Um... Who are you?
Orchid: I'm Orchid. Are you okay?
Little Girl: I... I, um...
Vyrn: We saw you staring at the bakery. Did you want cake?
Lyria: Are you on an errand?
Little Girl: Not exactly.
Orchid squats down next to the girl before looking her in the eyes.
Orchid: So you came here to shop... That makes two of us.
Little Girl: What did you come here to buy?
Orchid: I don't know.
Little Girl: You came here to buy something, but you don't know yet? That's... weird.
Orchid: True, I am having a bit of trouble.
Little Girl: You too?
The young girl fumbles in her pocket for a moment before taking out a small wallet.
Little Girl: See, I... I don't have enough money.
Orchid: That is a problem. Did you come here to buy cake?
Little Girl: Yeah...
Lyria: All by yourself? Where are your mom and dad?
Little Girl: Ngh...
Lyria: Oh, um... Sorry!
Vyrn: D-did we say something wrong?
Little Girl: My mommy and daddy don't love me! Why would they... get a cake for...
Orchid: What makes you say that?
Little Girl: They only care about Mac...
Vyrn: Mac? Who's that?
Little Girl: My little brother.
Orchid: Your parents don't love you anymore because you have a younger brother?
Little Girl: Nope... Everyone's always going on about Mac all the time—nobody cares about what I have to say...
Little Girl: They don't need someone like me around anymore!
The little girl covers her face with her hands.
Orchid: ...
Orchid places a hand on her shoulder.
Orchid: I don't know who your mother and father are.
Orchid: But after hearing your story, I think I understand how you feel.
Orchid: I think that you still love your parents very much.
Little Girl: But my mommy... She...
Orchid: It's scary to think that someone you love doesn't care for you anymore.
Orchid: However...
Orchid: You should share how you feel with them.
Orchid: If you care for someone, it's important that you let them know. Even if it takes a piece of cake to do it.
Little Girl: Y-yeah...
Vyrn: So what were you trying to buy a cake for anyway?
Vyrn: Were you planning on sharing it with your mom and dad?
Little Girl: Yeah... We'd share it and talk about all kinds of things...
Little Girl: We did it on my birthday with everyone too.
Little Girl: It was so much fun...
Orchid: It's fun to share conversations with those you love, even if it's about nothing at all.
Little Girl: But that's all over. Everybody only cares about Mac now—they don't have time for me.
Orchid: In that case, how about a letter?
Little Girl: A letter?
Orchid: Yes. Even if they no longer have the time, I'm sure you can find the right words through writing.
Orchid: What do you think?
Little Girl: Mm... Okay.
The little girl smiles for the first time since the start of their conversation.
Orchid: I'll write one too.
Little Girl: Huh? What about shopping?
Orchid: I've realized that this is also the best way for me to express my gratitude.
Little Girl: Huh...
Lyria: Oh, and maybe you could embellish your letter with a flower when you're done!
Orchid: Good idea.
Lyria: I don't know if you have enough money, but there's a florist not too far from here!
Little Girl: I think I've got an even better idea. Follow me!
Little Girl: Here, this way!

Just the Way You Are: Scene 3

Orchid and the others arrive at a field on the outskirts of town to find flowers for their letters. When the little girl runs into the nearby forest in search of a certain flower, she encounters a monster and nearly falls off a cliff, but Orchid saves her just in time.

Little Girl: Just stick this through here... and then loop-de-loop here... Got it?
Orchid: Hmm...
Orchid: Right here?
Little Girl: Yeah, you're really good at this!
The little girl has led Orchid and the others to grassy field on the outskirts of town to make floral crowns.
Little Girl: I'll make one for Mac too.
Lyria: Hehe, how kind of you.
Little Girl: He's still just a baby though. I wonder if it'd he'd even like it..
Orchid: I actually don't know if Apollo would like something like this either.
Little Girl: You too?
Orchid: That's right.
Orchid: But I hope that she does.
Lyria: When getting a gift for someone, you'd want them to like it, after all!
Orchid: Eugen said that she'd be happier knowing it was something I decided on.
Orchid: I think that's because she'll know it truly came from the heart.
Orchid: Whether those feelings are gratitude or love.
Little Girl: I want my mommy and daddy to know that I love them too...
Orchid: Then let them know.
Orchid: As for me, I want to learn more about Apollo.
Orchid: What she likes and doesn't like... I've realized that there's so much I don't know about her.
Little Girl: Then you should put that in your letter.
Orchid: Good idea.
The two girls smile at each other as they commit ink to parchment.
Little Girl: I like your dress, by the way. It's cute.
Orchid: Apollo was the one who gave it to me—it's my favorite.
Little Girl: You know that flower on your hat?
The little girl points at the corsage on Orchid's hat.
Little Girl: I know a flower that'll match perfectly with that one!
Little Girl: They're in the forest nearby—wait here, I'll go get some for you!
Orchid: W-wait!
Vyrn: Hey! It's dangerous to go alone! We'll come with you!
Orchid: Hold on, wait!
Little Girl: This way, you guys—
Monster: ...!
Little Girl: Eep!
Orchid: Watch out!
Little Girl: Aaaah!
Startled by the sudden monster appearance, the little girl runs deeper into the forest.
Orchid: No, wait!
Lyria: Go after her, Orchid!
  1. I'll handle the monsters!
  2. Be careful out there!

Choose: I'll handle the monsters!

Orchid: Thank you, (Captain)!

Orchid makes haste, following the little girl's voice.
Orchid: Wait!
Little Girl: Aaaah! Mommy, save me!
Orchid: The monster's gone, so stop running, or else—
Little Girl: Huh?
The girl leaps out of the thicket of trees onto a rocky cliffside.
Orchid: ...!
However, Orchid leaps out to catch her just in the nick of time.
Orchid: You should... be careful...
Little Girl: ...
Ngh...
Orchid: I've got you. Don't move.
Orchid takes her to a flat plot of land before putting her down.
Orchid: Phew... Thank goodness.
Little Girl: I'm... I'm sorry!
Orchid: There's no need for you to apologize. Are you hurt anywhere?
Little Girl: I'm fine, but... the flower crown...
Orchid: Ah... Looks like it's beyond repair.
Orchid: But that's fine. You're okay and that's what matters.
Orchid smiles assuredly to the little girl, but her expression soon turns pensive.

Just the Way You Are: Scene 4

Orchid apologizes to Apollonia for tearing the dress. However, Apollonia is only happy to hear that Orchid had liked it, telling her to feel free to do what she wants. Orchid responds by saying she wants to see and do more things with Apollonia.

(Captain) and the others lead the little girl back to the grassy field.
Apollonia: Orchid! (Captain)!
Lyria: Oh, Black Knight!
Apollonia: I was able to finish my business faster than expected, but... what happened here?
Little Girl: Ngh... Sniff...
Apollonia turns her attention to the little girl, still teary-eyed from the experience.
Lyria: We had a run-in with some monsters in the woods...
Vyrn: Yeah, this little lady just about fell off a cliff trying to get away.
Lyria: But Orchid saved her just in time!
Vyrn: And you can always count on (Captain) when it comes to kickin' monster butt!
Apollonia: I see. Is anyone hurt?
Orchid: ...
Apollonia: Is something wrong, Orchid?
Orchid: I'm sorry, Apollo...
Apollonia: Why are you apologizing?
Orchid: Apollo... I...
Orchid: I wanted to get you something to thank you, but I couldn't finish it in time...
Apollonia: To thank me?
Lyria: Orchid wanted to get you something to thank you for the dress.
Apollonia: I see. You don't need to worry about things like that.
Orchid nods in response, but her expression remains flustered.
Orchid: Not only that, but I ruined the dress you got for me...
She grips the hem of her dress.
Lyria: Oh, your skirt...
Not only is the white cloth stained with grass and dirt, but Orchid reveals that a part of it has been torn apart as well.
Vyrn: Oof, it musta gotten caught on the cliff earlier...
Orchid: It's my fault... I should've saved this outfit for only special occasions.
Orchid: This only happened because I couldn't help myself.
Lyria: Orchid...
Apollonia: Orchid, look at me.
Apollonia walks up to Orchid, kneeling before her.
Apollonia: You wore that dress because you liked it, right?
Orchid: Of course.
Apollonia: Then it was worth getting for you.
Apollonia: I want you to wear the clothes you like when you want to.
Apollonia: And I want you to go to new places and try out new things.
Apollonia: So don't fret—You should simply do what your heart tells you to do.
Orchid: I want to do more things with you, Apollo.
Apollonia: Is that so? That's the best gift you could've given me then.
Orchid: Really?
Apollonia: Of course. I would never lie to you about that.
Orchid: I see...
Orchid finally lets go of her skirt.
Orchid: In that case, I was wrong to apologize.
Orchid: I would like to rephrase my words to you from earlier.
Orchid: Thank you, Apollo.
Apollonia: You're welcome.
Her expression brightens once again at Apollonia, who smiles back at her.
Apollonia: As for your skirt, the damage doesn't look too bad—repairing it shouldn't take any time at all.
Orchid: Will you repair it?
Apollonia: Oh, um... It might be best if we had a tailor look at it.
Orchid: A tailor? Are you too busy?
Apollonia: It's not that, I just...
Apollonia: I... I'm just not very good with a needle. I'm afraid it might come out even worse if I were to repair it.
Vyrn: Whoa, really? Even you have your shortcomings, huh?
Orchid: Hehe...
Apollonia: Wh-what's so funny? Sewing, cooking, all that nonsense... I've long since renounced such things to—
Orchid: No, it isn't that...
Orchid: I wanted to learn more about you, Apollo.
Orchid: So I'm just... happy I got to see a side of you that I haven't seen before.
Apollonia: Ah... I see.
Apollonia: If it makes you smile, then that's all that matters.
Orchid: Say, what do you say we go find a tailor together?
Apollonia: Sounds like a plan.
Orchid: Yeah... Thanks, Apollo.
Orchid grins to herself as the hem of her skirt flutters in the wind.
