The Flightless Eagle

Nezahualpilli continues his quest to find a cure for his acrophobia. After receiving a tip from Siero, the crew heads deep into a secluded forest in search of an elusive doctor.

Vyrn: Now, uh... I know what the shopkeep said, but are we sure we gotta slog through a forest to find this doctor's village?
Lyria: I was thinking the same thing... It really doesn't look like anyone lives here.
Vyrn: You sure we can trust Siero on this one?
Vyrn: Could such a miracle worker even live in a place like this?
Nezahualpilli: Hah hah hah! Do not let doubt consume you! Isn't that right, (Captain)?
(Captain) and the others set out to find the doctor who may be able to cure Nezahualpilli of his acrophobia.
However, according to Sierokarte the doctor is said to live in a secluded village deep within the mountains.
Vyrn: I gotta say, though... Why would someone live out here in the boondocks?
Vyrn: I mean, how the heck would you make a living as a doctor out here anyways?
Nezahualpilli: That is certainly a fair point. You've a keen mind, Vyrn.
Nezahualpilli: I heard that this doctor is something of a heart specialist...
Nezahualpilli: But to live in such a secluded area... I wonder...
Nezahualpilli: Hm! How very curious indeed!
Vyrn: It's gonna be a strange old coot for sure. Whatever floats his boat though.
Nezahualpilli: Hah hah hah! All the more fascinating if you ask me!
Nezahualpilli: I'd be most interested in hearing why his boat floats so!
Lyria: There's something I've been meaning to ask, Nezahualpilli... why are you so scared of heights?
Nezahualpilli: Hm? I suppose I've yet to tell you why...
Nezahualpilli: The reason is frighteningly mundane, I'm ashamed to say.
Nezahualpilli: At what age was it, I wonder... I was naught but a fledgling, to be sure.
Nezahualpilli: I was climbing a tree, you see... When I made it to the top my feet must have slipped, and I plummeted to the ground.
Vyrn: Whoa! Were you okay?
Nezahualpilli: Well, I've always been blessed with a robust body, and so I managed to avoid any grave injuries.
Nezahualpilli: But ever since then, simply being in a high place fills me with a sense of utmost dread.
Lyria: So that's what happened...
Vyrn: I don't blame you, pal. Who wouldn't be afraid of heights after something like that?
Nezahualpilli: Hah hah hah! It would do me no good to say so!
Nezahualpilli: I am a king. I wouldn't deign to stain the pride of my clan with such an excuse!
Nezahualpilli: I shan't give up, for this burden is not merely my own.
Lyria: B-but you're already so strong, Nezahualpilli!
Nezahualpilli: Hah hah hah! I shall make no claims to such strength. I speak not out of modesty, but truth.
Nezahualpilli: One cannot truly claim to be the winged king when filled with terror at the sight of the ground far below...
Nezahualpilli: As such, I'm not worthy of the title of king in my current state.
Nezahualpilli: For what kind of king cannot even protect his own clan, I ask you?
Lyria: Nezahualpilli...
Nezahualpilli: Cheer up, friends. I need only find a cure and all will be well.
Nezahualpilli: Right, (Captain)? Make haste! We must find this doctor!

The Flightless Eagle: Scene 2

The crew has found the doctor at long last, but he refuses to give Nezahualpilli an examination. However, before they can leave, it appears that the Erste Empire also has some business to settle with the doctor.

Having made their way out of the forest somehow, (Captain) and company find the elusive doctor's village at long last.
After asking some of the locals, the crew finally manages to find the doctor's home.
Doctor: An examination? I must refuse.
Nezahualpilli: What! B-but pray tell, why would you...
Vyrn: Yeah! You're supposed to be a hotshot doctor, aren't you? Come on, just give him a look!
Doctor: You've been led here under false pretenses. I research disease. I am no doctor.
Doctor: Though such things are not beyond my ability...
Lyria: B-but... what about the examination...
Doctor: Did you not hear me? I want no part in it.
Doctor: Why else would I escape to a faraway village such as this?
Doctor: Go. And I'll not have you darken my doorway again.
Lyria: Nngh... That didn't go so well...
Vyrn: What was with that old coot! Talk about stingy!
Nezahualpilli: Hmm... Surely he must have a reason for refusing our patronage—I just know it.
Doctor: Whoaaa!
Lyria: T-that voice just now... It must've been the doctor!
Nezahualpilli: Hm! Right from whence we came! We must go, (Captain)!
Doctor: S-stop! Get your hands off me! I won't go back!
Imperial Soldier: You've caused us quite a bit of trouble disappearing like that, doctor.
Imperial Soldier: That research of yours is very, very important to the empire, you see...
Doctor: P-please, somebody! Help me, I beg you! I won't go back, I swear!
Nezahualpilli: You, there! While you may have business with this man, could you not proceed a bit more peaceably?
Imperial Soldier: Huh? Who the hell are you guys?
Doctor: H-help me! I'll explain later, I swear! And I'll give you the examination you require!
Vyrn: All right!
Lyria: Hehe, don't pretend like you weren't going to already! Right, (Captain)?
Nezahualpilli: Hm! That's the (Captain) I know!
Imperial Soldier: No idea what's going on here, but you have some nerve buttin' in—hope you're ready to have your butts handed to you!

The Flightless Eagle: Scene 3

After rescuing the doctor from imperial soldiers, Nezahualpilli learns that his condition is merely inside his head. The crew takes their leave, but it isn't long before word of the doctor's abduction reaches them.

Doctor: I can't believe you all saved me even after all that... You have my thanks.
Nezahualpilli: I would never turn a blind eye to someone in such a dire situation.
Nezahualpilli: However, I must know—just what kind of doctor are you? Those were imperial soldiers.
Doctor: That's right... I was once a researcher of the heart under the empire's name.
Once upon a time, the doctor had been a researcher in the employ of the Erstian Empire.
However, once he discovered that his research had been used for brainwashing and other nefarious uses, the doctor fled in horror.
Doctor: I never would have imagined they'd find me here in such a remote village... You have my thanks.
Vyrn: Sheesh... Is there any corner of the sky those imperial lackeys won't go?
Doctor: And so... You, young man. I believe you were seeking an examination?
Nezahualpilli: Yes... There's one thing in the skies that frightens me more than anything else...
Doctor: We can speak more at my house. You must have undertaken quite the journey just to reach me.
Lyria: Thank you so much! We just may be able to figure something out, Nezahualpilli!
Nezahualpilli: Yes, indeed! Long enough I have relied on (Captain)'s strength... We may have found a solution at last!
As such, Nezahualpilli finally receives the examination he had been hoping for.
Nezahualpilli: Come again? I-it cannot be!
Doctor: The root of your fear solely rests within your mind. Otherwise, you're the picture of health.
Nezahualpilli: Do you take me for a fool!
Nezahualpilli: The quests I pursue are worthy of a king!
Nezahualpilli: Yet you say all I must do is believe that high places do not fill me with fear...
Lyria: Nezahualpilli...
Doctor: No one is more sorry than myself, but there's not a thing I can do for you.
Nezahualpilli: I... That's... What am I to do then?
Vyrn: What can you do? You heard the doc.
Lyria: M-maybe you just need to give it some time!
Lyria: Think of it like an acquired taste—maybe when you're older you'll get the hang of it... or something...
Villager: H-hey! Are you the crew that just chased off those imperial soldiers earlier?
Nezahualpilli: Indeed, we are...
Villager: Well, they came back! They snatched the doctor and carried him off to their battleship!
Vyrn: Say what? They just don't know when to quit, do they?
Nezahualpilli: On the ship itself, you say... Then we musn't waste any time.
Nezahualpilli: (Captain)! Shall we not give these scoundrels chase?
Vyrn: There they are! That's the ship, right?
Nezahualpilli: Hmm... There's no sight of the good doctor anywhere though...
Lyria: But look at all the imperial soldiers...
Nezahualpilli: We've no choice but to board if we wish to save the doctor.
Vyrn: Will you be okay, Nez? I mean, we're pretty high up...
Nezahualpilli: We have no risk of falling—so long as we jump when we're as close as possible to their ship.
Vyrn: Whoa! Slow down there, buddy! What if you, like, freeze up or something?
Nezahualpilli: So long as I don't see the ground I shall stay nicely thawed!
Nezahualpilli: Onward, friends! (Captain)! Just follow me, the winged king!

The Flightless Eagle: Scene 4

The crew realizes that they've been lured into a trap when finding no one aboard the battleship. Steeled by a sense of urgency, Nezahualpilli takes wing in spite of his fear of heights.

After taking down the imperial soldiers, (Captain) and the crew search the battleship.
Vyrn: Wait, what's with this ship? No one's here!
Nezahualpilli: It seems to me that those gathered on deck had been the entirety of their company...
Vyrn: No passengers and no cargo on board either... What's going on here?
Lyria: Oh, look! Down over there, (Captain)!
Lyria points toward the village the crew just left earlier.
All signs pointed to the doctor having been kidnapped from the village.
Villager: Hey, I went ahead and gave those guys the runaround.
Villager: So it looks like the plan worked out just as planned... Don't forget what's in it for me, right?
Imperial Soldier: That was some fine work. We'll get back with you regarding your payment, as long as you just keep your mouth shut.
Doctor: Ngh... You scum!
Imperial Soldier: Don't look so scared, doc... You're very valuable to the empire.
Imperial Soldier: Why do you think we shelled out all that cash to get this whole operation up and running?
Doctor: Damnit... You knew all along!
Imperial Soldier: Settle down. No use calling for help now—that flock of fools is likely sailing above the clouds at this point.
Vyrn: Those tricksters! Did they dupe us somehow?
Nezahualpilli: It would seem so, Vyrn.
Nezahualpilli: Even if we were to touch down, we would most likely lose track of them in the forest...
Lyria: B-but... What if we landed right away?
Nezahualpilli: Hmm... Actually...
Nezahualpilli: There's something I wish to ask you, (Captain)...
Nezahualpilli: Overcoming my fear, dancing through the sky... Do you think I am capable?
  1. I believe in you!
  2. Don't be reckless!

Choose: I believe in you!

Nezahualpilli: Very well... I shall place my faith in your words.
Nezahualpilli: For I may be the winged king...
Nezahualpilli: But no less than a member of your crew, (Captain)
Go to "Continue 1"

Choose: Don't be reckless!

Nezahualpilli: Ahaha! I appreciate your concern, (Captain)!
Nezahualpilli: If it so, then it is my duty to handle them.
Nezahualpilli: Who are the winged if not the masters of the heavens?!

Continue 1

Lyria: Nezahualpilli? You can't be...
Nezahualpilli: Yes. The heavens... If I am to be taken for a true king, then I must learn to taste them for myself.
Nezahualpilli: Phew... As long as my resolve is hardened, even the most fearsome views can become beautiful...
Vyrn: Hey, dummy! Don't even think about it!
Nezahualpilli: Hwoaaah!
Imperial Soldier: Okay, let's mosey along now. That means you too, doc.
Villager: Hey, now wait just a minute! Where the hell's my payment?
Imperial Soldier: Huh? Oh, that's right.
Villager: Urk!
Imperial Soldier: A fool and his money...
Doctor: You monster!
Imperial Soldier: Oh, doc... You do realize this was the man who sold you out? Either way, it's much too late for you...
Imperial Soldier: What is this? Something's falling from the sky!
???: The gravest sin... Such violence will not stand with me.
Imperial Soldier: What!
Nezahualpilli: I order you to release that man under decree of the winged king!
Imperial Soldier: Y-you! Impossible... Where did... Did you fly down here?
Nezahualpilli: There is no sky these wings cannot conquer! The skies are the domain of the winged king!
Imperial Soldier: Grr... Damn you!
And thus, thanks to Nezahualpilli's bravery, (Captain) and the crew are able to rescue the doctor from the clutches of the empire.
Doctor: Thank you... I can't believe you've saved me again.
Nezahualpilli: I should be the one thanking you. I never would have mustered that courage had you not examined me.
Doctor: Is that so... Well, I'm glad I was able to do some good after all.
Doctor: I suppose I can't stay here for much longer... I must bid you farewell. Perhaps we may one day meet again.
With those parting words, the doctor leaves the village to begin a new journey.
Lyria: Hehe... He was actually quite a kindhearted man. I hope we see him again someday.
Nezahualpilli: Ah, yes... Indeed, uh, we...
Vyrn: Hey there, are you okay?
Nezahualpilli: I... My anxiety seems to have gotten the better of me...
Nezahualpilli: It seems my courage has fled...
Vyrn: H-hey now, what happened to all that bravado just earlier?
Lyria: Hehe... I guess this means you're going to need a bit more time.
It would seem that the day's events were not quite the cure-all Nezahualpilli had been hoping for.
They were, however, more than enough to prove him worthy of carrying his title as the winged king.
