The Best Worst Day

While on a sightseeing trip, Halluel and Malluel have their first difference of opinion over which shops to visit and decide to look around separately. They each end up running into trouble, but the experience makes them realize how much they enjoy their time spent together.

One day, Halluel and Malluel are visiting an island on a sightseeing trip.
Halluel: I can't believe our luck winning travel vouchers from a lottery. And they even threw in a free stay at a popular luxury resort hotel!
Malluel: Hehe. This must be our reward for working so hard every day as letter carriers.
A war once raged between archangels, skydwellers, and fallen angels, with the fate of the Sky Realm at stake.
Since the end of the conflict, the archangels have abdicated their former roles overseeing the skies.
Halluel and Malluel now spend their days in the mortal world as owner-operators of the Archangel Parcel Service.
Malluel: Today's our first break in a while, so let's enjoy ourselves to the fullest!
Halluel: You said it, Mal. It'd be a waste not to make the most of this chance!
Malluel: Once we decided on this place, I looked up clothing boutiques and novelty shops in the area and made a bunch of notes.
Halluel: Great minds think alike! I wrote down all the places that caught my eye too.
Malluel: Well, aren't we just two peas in a pod! Betcha the shops we found are the same as well.
Halluel: We always pick the same stores when we're out shopping, after all. Come on, let's both say our top choice at the same time.
Malluel: Sure thing. Ready, set...
Halluel & Malluel: The jewelry shop on the east side!
The apparel shop on the west side!
In unison, the pair point to streets going in two completely opposite directions.
At this unexpected turn of events, they stare at each other wide-eyed in silence.
Halluel: No way... I don't think this has ever happened before.
Malluel: I never would've expected us to be drawn to different shops...
Halluel: Huh... Mind if I take a look at your notes, Mal?
Malluel: Sure, go right ahead.
Taking the list from her twin, Halluel pulls another sheet of paper out of her satchel.
Huddling together to compare their notes, the two blink in disbelief.
Malluel: A few of the shops are the same, but most of them are completely different.
Halluel: Hmm... We've got till tomorrow, but it'd probably still be hard to visit all these places...
Halluel & Malluel: ...
With neither wishing to waste this rare opportunity, Halluel and Malluel are at a loss for what to do.
Following several minutes of wracking their brains, they at last come to a decision.
Halluel: How about we split up, then meet back after we've each seen the stores we want to see?
Malluel: I suppose that does seems like our best option.
Malluel: Since we've traveled this far, I don't want to leave with any regrets...
Halluel: Sounds like we have a plan, then. Let's set a time to meet up at the inn.
After deciding on a time to reconvene, the pair disappear into the crowd in pursuit of their own objectives.
A few hours later...
Malluel is looking around the shopping district in the town's western quarter.
Malluel: Hehe, take a look at these cute earrings, Hal—
Malluel: Oh...
Having called to her other half out of habit, Malluel can't help but grin sheepishly.
Malluel: Shopping alone is an interesting change of pace, but it'd be better with Hal around...
Malluel: Wait, no. We're supposed to be having fun by ourselves right now.
Shaking her head, she tries on the pair of earrings and reaches to pull something out of her pocket. However...
Malluel: Huh?
Malluel: What the... That's weird. I was sure I put it in here...
Malluel: Oh no... It's gone! The cute hand mirror that Hal gave me is gone!
Malluel: Did I drop it? Or maybe I left it somewhere while I was shopping... E-either way, I'd better go look for it!
Turning pale, Malluel goes to retrace her steps, desperately searching for the missing mirror.
Meanwhile, Halluel has traveled to the eastern side of town to browse the shops.
Woman: Now, now, don't be shy! Eat up!
Halluel: Th-thanks. But this is quite a lot... I'm not sure I'll be able to eat it all...
A dry laugh escapes Halluel's lips as she surveys the enormous spread covering the table before her.
Woman: Oh, are you not a fan of meat? I'm sorry, I shouldn't have assumed...
Halluel: No, it's not that... But you didn't have to do all this just because I managed to get your stuff back from a purse snatcher...
Woman: Why, yes I did! You really saved the day! No one else was willing to help me.
Woman: So I want to give you a proper thanks! Or am I just being a bother?
Seeing the woman's eyes well up with tears, Halluel reluctantly picks up her fork.
Halluel: I appreciate it.
Woman: ...!
Wonderful! Then dig in!
Halluel: (Urgh... There's no way I can eat all this by myself. But I can't just blow off her kind gesture either...)
Halluel: (If only Mal were here...)
Imagining her twin off having the time of her life shopping, Halluel sighs to herself.
Halluel: Oh, Mal... You're here early. Welcome back.
Malluel: You too, Hal. Welcome back.
Though sooner than originally planned, Halluel and Malluel join up at their previously agreed-upon meeting place.
Halluel: ...?
What's wrong, Mal? You seem really wiped.
Malluel: Yeah... I ran into a little trouble. But don't worry, I found what I was looking for.
Malluel: You're looking a little pale yourself, Hal. Did something happen?
Halluel: Ahaha... Yeah, sort of. Let's just say I was on the receiving end of some really enthusiastic hospitality.
Halluel & Malluel: ...
Halluel: It's still a little early, but what do you say we check in?
Malluel: Yeah. Plopping down on a nice, soft bed sounds really good right now.
Sharing a rather awkward laugh, the pair head for the front desk of the inn.
However...
Malluel: ...
Sigh.
Halluel: I can't believe we didn't have a reservation...
Malluel: When it rains, it pours, huh?
Halluel: Here we are having such a fun trip, and then something like this happens...
Halluel: But we're in a real pickle now. All the hotels around here are fully booked. At this rate, we'll have to rough it outdoors.
Malluel: Oh, I heard there are inns in the next town over too. It's not too far as the archangel flies...
Malluel: Huh?
Hearing a sudden sound, Malluel turns to look toward the edge of town.
Elderly Woman: Oof...
Halluel follows her gaze to see an elderly woman seated on the ground, surrounded by scattered packages.
Exchanging worried glances, the two hurry over to the woman's side.
Halluel: Are you okay? You're not hurt, are you?
Elderly Woman: No, no, I'm all right. Just took a little tumble, that's all...
Elderly Woman: Ow, ow, ouch...
Malluel: Don't push yourself too hard, now.
Elderly Woman: Not to worry, dear. I just landed on my backside. It was nothing serious.
Halluel: Say, if you'd like, we can carry your things for you.
Malluel: And we're couriers by day, so we have plenty of experience at it.
Halluel: The streets are dark at night, and we don't want you to end up getting hurt. What do you say?
Elderly Woman: That's true... Well then, I suppose I'll accept your gracious offer. Thank you, ladies.
Thus Halluel and Malluel make their way toward the mountain behind the town where the woman's home is located.
Malluel: Is this... an inn?
A short time later, they arrive at what appears to be a time-worn, yet still impressive, inn.
Elderly Woman: Yes, though we haven't had many customers since all those new-fangled hotels were built in town.
Elderly Woman: Ah, you two are looking for lodgings, right? You're more than welcome to stay here.
Having learned of the pair's situation along the way, the elderly woman makes them a tempting proposal.
Elderly Woman: You carried my heavy things all the way here, so please allow me to repay you.
Halluel: Well, if you insist... Thanks. We'll take you up on that.
Malluel: Yeah, that would be a huge help! We were on the verge of having to sleep outside tonight.
Elderly Woman: Hehe. Well, I'm afraid it's not fancy like the places in town, but make yourselves at home.
Halluel and Malluel smile back at the woman, overcome with relief at having finally secured a place to stay.
Halluel: Ahh... This feels amazing...
Malluel: You said it... It's so soothing...
After having dinner in their magnificent guest room, the pair relax in the inn's open-air bath at the suggestion of the elderly woman.
Halluel: All the food she cooked had such a gentle flavor. It sure was delicious, huh?
Malluel: I'll say! It was just what I needed after such a long day. I ended up stuffing myself.
Halluel: We definitely had our share of mishaps today... but looking back, they were all new and interesting experiences.
Malluel: Yeah. But you know what? At the end of the day, it's more fun going out with you, Hal.
Malluel: It might be nice to do things alone once in a while, but I'd rather share the fun with you.
Halluel: I totally agree. I only really feel at home when spending time with you, Mal.
Halluel: I'm sure today won't be the last time we have split opinions or go different ways.
Halluel: But... I know you'll always be by my side. That much will never change.
Malluel: Hehe. I'm glad you think so, Hal. And you know I feel the same way!
Malluel: After spending time apart, I feel like I've come to appreciate how much fun it is hanging out with you even more.
Malluel: So all things considered, today was a great day!
Halluel: Yeah! We got to try new things, eat tasty food, soak in a hot spring... I couldn't imagine a better vacation!
Malluel: I wish we could share this feeling with Az and Iss too.
Halluel: On that note, what should we buy for souvenirs? It'd be nice if we got something unique to the area.
Malluel: Good idea. And while we're at it, why don't we buy four so we can all match?
Despite meeting with a number of unexpected incidents, Halluel and Malluel are able to grow thanks to a new experience broadening their horizons.
Joyful, angelic laughter can be heard echoing from the bath for quite some time afterward.
