Nose on the Case

(Captain) and the crew spot Barawa's canine partner, Buddy, dashing out of the detective agency's office aboard the Grandcypher. The two had been fighting over a pair of letters that had been delivered to the airship—one, a job request, and the other, a threatening message. Sarya, worried for Buddy's safety, pursues the dog, leaving Barawa in the hands of the others.

Buddy: Woof! Woof woof! Awoooh!
Buddy: Ahem. Please excuse my outburst.
Buddy: As you can see, I am a dog. Regarding my true name, I'm afraid I have to keep that a secret for the time being.
Buddy: What I'm about to show you is a look into the life of a hopeless man who is, at times, quick to give up, can be slightly needy, and has a body that ill suits his timid soul. Ahem!
Buddy: This beloved man of whom I speak is my dear partner, Detective Barawa, and the story I'm about to tell is about him, his assistant Sarya, and, of course, myself.
Buddy: Buckle up and prepare for the most wild, hard-boiled thriller of a tale—or maybe it's more like a soft-boiled retelling of a slice of our lives. I'll leave that for you to decide.
One day, as (Captain) and the crew are patrolling the Grandcypher, they run into a certain somebody.
Barawa: How many times do I have to tell you? We're not doing that one!
Vyrn: Whoa! What's goin' on?
Vyrn: Isn't that Chairlock Holmes's office?
Lyria: Is he arguing about something? How odd. I wonder what happened.
Barawa: Just give it up already! I mean, look at how much we'd earn doing this other case! We could be making a fortune!
Vyrn: Heh, I think I know what's up! He's arguin' with Miss Assistant over what case to take on next!
Lyria: I see! Wow, Vyrn. It's like you're a detective too!
Vyrn: Hehe! You'll be hearin' the name "Detective Vyrn" throughout these skies soon enough—just you wait!
Vyrn: But still, things must be goin' well for him to have multiple cases!
Lyria: Yep...
Lyria: Wait, now isn't the time to joke around! If they're arguing, we need to go stop them!
Vyrn and the others make their way toward Barawa's room—that is, the detective's Grandcypher branch office. Right as they're about to knock—
Sarya: Oh? Hello, everyone. What brings you all to our office?
Vyrn: Whoa! How come you're here, Miss Assistant?
Sarya: I just got back from a quick shopping trip.
Vyrn: Huh? Then who's Barawa arguin' with?
Buddy: Woof!
Vyrn: Wha—?
Barawa: Hm? Oh, it's you guys.
Sarya: Detective, Buddy's running away!
Vyrn: Was he really squabblin' with a dog? Why would he somethin' like that?
Barawa: Listen to me, Sarya. The rest of you should listen up as well. This isn't my fault. I didn't do anything wrong!
With Barawa having claimed his innocence, (Captain) and the others enter the office and find the room littered with paper.
Sarya: The room is a total mess! Wait, are these new job requests?
Barawa: They indeed are. These two letters were delivered to our office earlier today.
Barawa: It'd be best for you to read them over once before I get into the details.
Sarya: All right. Hm... "An unmarked letter was delivered to the mistress whom I serve—"
Sarya: I see... So this is an investigation request. The mistress wishes to identify this love letter's sender...
Lyria: An anonymous love letter? I'd be curious about that too!
Sarya: Yes, but it's possible that the letter was unmarked by mistake. Either that, or they wanted to express their feelings without being found out...
Sarya: Regardless, other than the fact that the letter is missing its sender, there's nothing about this case that particularly stands out.
Vyrn: Let's take a look at the other one... Huh? What is this? Why is it all wet?
Barawa: That would be Buddy's saliva.
Vyrn: Gross. You mean I'm touchin' dog slobber?
Sarya: Well, since you're already holding it, Vyrn, could you angle it this way for me to read?
Vyrn: Just make it quick!
Sarya: Let's see... "Detective Barawa, if you care for your life, leave this town at once."
Sarya: Detective! Is this supposed to be some sort of threat?
Vyrn: Huh? A threat?
Barawa: That appears to be the case, yes. You could call it an occupational hazard, I suppose.
Sarya: How can you be so nonchalant about this? Your life could be in danger!
Barawa: Hah hah hah. Patience, Sarya.
Barawa: You've got it all mixed up. Whoever sent this letter doesn't want me around here.
Barawa: And what does that mean? It means that there's something to keep hidden from a detective—a mystery waiting to be solved!
Barawa: Well? Doesn't that excite you?
Sarya: Urk... I guess a little...
Sarya: But no! It's your life we're talking about here, Detective! What if you got hurt? That's not exciting at all!
Barawa: Now, now... Calm down. That letter is also without a sender. It hasn't been postmarked either.
Barawa: Buddy wanted to take this case as well, but without a sender, we have no leads.
Barawa: So I figured that we should put it on hold and take on the investigation request for now. Buddy didn't seem too happy about that, however.
Barawa: Neither of us would budge, so he just gave up and left.
Barawa: I hope he doesn't hate me for this...
Sarya: Hm... It's rare to see Buddy so insistent on something. Perhaps there's more to this case than what meets the eye...
Barawa: Regardless, at this point, every second spent thinking about an anonymous threat is a second wasted. I'm off to see the other client.
Vyrn: But what about Buddy? Aren't you gonna go look for him, Barawa?
Sarya: Yeah, we should go after him!
Barawa: I'll make up with him later! You go find him, Sarya!
Sarya: Huh? Are you upset, too, Detective?
Barawa: I'm not! I have places to be and mysteries to solve—that's all!
Vyrn: How's a guy like you so childish?
Barawa: Don't ask me! And I'm definitely not afraid that Buddy's mad at me or anything!
Sarya: Fine... I'll do as you say. But I won't allow you to leave by yourself. Somebody is after you—that much is true.
Barawa: Hey, I may not look the part, but I'm an ex-soldier. I know danger when I see it.
Barawa: I know what this is—it's the price I pay for being famous! Hah hah hahhh!
Sarya: ...
Sarya: (Captain), Vyrn, Lyria... Please watch over Barawa while I'm gone.
Lyria: Of course! We'll go with him to his client!
Vyrn: The fact that he was told to leave town means there's somethin' here, right?
Vyrn: I dunno what that is, but we'll make sure to keep an eye on him!
Sarya: Thank you! And please be careful, everybody.
Sarya: Detective, you can leave Buddy to me.
Barawa: Sorry for the bother, Sarya. You have my thanks.
Sarya entrusts the detective, clearly upset after his argument with Buddy, to (Captain) and the others, then takes her leave in search of the canine partner.
